Renee Bernard is a ‘new to me author’ and I had no idea what to expect when I picked up her latest release Seduction Wears SapphiresWhat I found was a delightful historical with well drawn characters and a unique and interesting story line. It had me asking the question: “What happens when the shoe is on the other foot?”

With many historical romances we have the young heroine being carefully watched by an overbearing relative, a concerned mother or perhaps a pompous brother. Much to my delight in Seduction Wears Sapphires we have the complete opposite.

Ashe Blackwell has returned from India a changed man, and the changes are not for the better. Unfortunately he has become an unrepentant rogue who is tearing through London hell-bent on scandal and self destruction with nary a care for the consequences. However his beloved Grandfather has reached the end of his limit and worries for the family legacy. Seeing no end to Ashe’s incredibly destructive behavior he presents a challenge: Spend one month in London without causing a scandal or he will be disinherited. Ashe accepts the challenge thinking it will be an easy feat to perform away from the watchful eye of his grandfather. Ah- but there is a catch; he will be chaperoned and his every move watched by Miss Caroline Townsend, an independent and educated woman from across the pond—an American.

Caroline and Ashe are complete opposites; they couldn’t be more different. She is unlike the fashionable woman of London that Ashe is accustomed to. In fact, when Ashe first meets Caroline he says: “A woman who cannot embroider or play the pianoforte but can quote Dante and Socrates—imagine that!” From that moment on they are well on their way to finding out how difficult it will be to live under the same roof. Both Caroline and Ashe have to weave their way through the minefields of living together, a London season and a mutual attraction that may cause the very scandal they are both trying to avoid.

Every month there are many historical romances to choose from. What makes one stand out above the rest? For me it’s the tone and timbre of the book; the voice if, you will. And I found the author, Ms. Bernard’s voice to be rich and nuanced. She moves the story line along with both dialogue and an interesting technique of highlighting the characters’ thoughts. It allows us, the reader, to know exactly what they are thinking and feeling and gives the book an almost voyeuristic feel. Ms. Bernard also gives both protagonists very strong back stories and clear motivations for their actions. The romance and passion are believable and strong and the story line kept me turning the pages.

Seduction Wears Sapphires is the second book in her “Jaded Gentleman” series yet it completely stands alone. I’ve yet to read the first book, Revenge Wears Rubies, but after reading this one I’ve already purchased it and I’m looking forward to reading it.

So, dear reader, if you’re looking for an historical romance with a bit of a twist, a headstrong American, an Englishman in need of some emotional rescue, an interesting story line, well-developed characters, and really good romance, might I suggest Seduction Wears Sapphires.

Until next Monday, remember, there’s a book waiting to be read.

I’m curious: When you look for a new author to read – what are you looking for?  Have you recently found a ‘new to you’ author? And if you do discover a new author you like do you immediately go out and buy other books in their backlist?

When I look for a new author, I look for a story that is plausible - it has to be based somewhat in reality.  Like I can imagine the characters being real life people and the situations having really happened, whether in the past or the present.

The author I've recently discovered is Heather Wardell and her book, Love, Life, and Polar Bear Tattoos.  I highly recommend it.  I haven't found anything else by her, then again ... I've haven't been actively looking either.

Another new author to my relam is Karen Marie Moning and her Fae Series.  I'm reading the 1st book DarkFever right now and I've already got the rest of the series on my wish list.  I'm waiting to see how I enjoy the rest of the book (I'm currently on Ch. 17 right now) before I put them in my cart to buy.

Typically though ... I do tend to buy the books outright if I love one book by an author.  I've done it with Bertrice Small, Catherine Coulter, Diana Palmer, and Julia Quinn to name a few.  And I haven't been disappointed by them yet!

I usually find new authors by different reviews I read, a movie or tv show coming out, etc.  Also, with the Free Fridays BN has, I have found several new authors that I wouldn't have otherwise read.  If I like the author then I will purchase more of their books immediately and put some of them in my wish list for later.  If it is a series that I have found I like, I will purchase the rest of the series that is out all at once.  Some books I will download to my Nook and others I will purchase the hard copy for..it just depends.

Great Review, Marisa!

I will admit that it didn't sound good when I read a chapter from off the bookshelf. After reviewing it a second time and then reading your review, I'm off to buy it. I love a good twist and the characters sound deliciously good.

Do you think that it's best that I buy the first in the series, Revenge Wears Rubies, or could I start off reading, Seduction Wears Sapphires?

Happy Reading.

Oh and to answer your questions above and in one word, yes!

What I look for in a new author is confidence in writing. I know that sounds crazy but truely, if I can read a page from a chapter and immediately catch a hint of real sarcasium or feel the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end, then I know I found an author that is willing to take it to the next level.

The first author, for me that I discovered was Tracy Anne Warren. Maybe to others she isn't knew to the scene or not, but for me she was new and I fell in love with your Byrons Series.

Anne Mallory was another. Now I know she has been around for a bit but I never got a chance to pick up one of her novels till I grew curious over the story line of, For the Earl's Pleasure. Holy Moly...wow! That story took me by surprise and ever since then I have bought every book by Anne and I just bought her most recent, Seven Secrets of Seduction. That was so good!

Hi Ellie, lately I've been 'stumbling' upon 'new to me' authors through the recommendations of other readers - so thanks for steering me towards Heather Wardell; I'll definitely check out her out.

1archi1, I'm with you. I've discovered some really interesting books and new authors through the 'Free Friday's' on B&N. Authors and even genres I wouldn't have necessarily tried have made their way on to my Nook and I'm slowly but surely broadening my 'reading horizons'.

Hey Rosemary - I haven't read Revenge Wears Rubies so I really can't recommend it, however I read the second book without any problems as it definitely stands alone. I love that you look for confidence in writing. What a great way to find new authors. I think in the past I was less courageous and pretty much stuck with authors that I knew and liked. NOW however, I'm fearless and will try anything once - but it's true I'll go back to an author if there is 'confidence in their writing' as well as an ability to create 3 dimensional characters and speak in a voice that is honest and true to the story line.

@ RosemaryScarlett - I love Tracy Ann Warren!  I've got the entire Byron Series as well.  Great books and I just stumbled onto them when my Rhapsody Book Club autoshiped Tempted By His Kiss to me early last year.

I could hardly put the book down!

Ellie: I know exactly what you mean! oh my goodness that Cade Byron...woohew... :smileyhappy: but my favorite was Edward. He took my breath away. Jack made me cry and like Meg said, "Rakes make the best husbands, especially when they fall in love." What Jack did for Grace, I could not stop crying when I reached that one part.

Oh Tracy Anne Warren definatly knows how to write a good story and keeping her readers hooked!
