In the bucolic town of Lucky Harbor, where everyone knows your name and your business, Maddie hopes to start over by working with her two step-sisters at an Inn her recently deceased mother has left them. While Maddie’s decision to start over was relatively easy—the reality is anything but. She barely knows her sisters and they have nothing in common. The inn they’ve inherited, well, it was built in the early 1920s and hasn’t seen a hammer or nail since; and just to make life interesting, Maddie has sworn off men. But the fates… they do conspire.
Having sworn off men, Maddie is caught unawares when she bumps into Jax Cullen; a man of many talents as well as a few secrets. One thing he’s got going for him—there isn’t a woman in Lucky Harbor who wouldn’t ‘do him.’ Yes, you heard me right—Jax has smarts, looks, charm and sensitivity. From ex-high powered attorney to master carpenter and Mayor of Lucky Harbor, Jax Cullen has it all. What makes Jax a hero you can fall in love with is his brand of compassion—it’s all about how much space he can give Maddie allowing her to regain her self-esteem and confidence on her own—and in that regard he’s surpassed ‘master’ status.
The relationship between Jax and Maddie is very often ‘sigh worthy’, no doubt. However it’s the relationship between the sisters that really resonated with me. Watching these three interact and get to know one another as they go through the emotional struggles that come with being related, but not really knowing each other, was heartfelt and believable, giving each character a reality that lifts them off the page. In their dealings with each other the author deftly poses the question: “Just because you’re related to someone, if you met them for the first time on the street; would you like them?”
What makes this romance multi-layered, interesting, and witty is watching Maddie as she bungles, falls, and trips her way not only through the reconstruction of the inn, but through the relationships with Jax and her sisters. She’s a loveable character who faces her fears as she grabs at this second chance at life.
Simply Irresistible gives us three sisters, who couldn’t be more different; an inn that most of us would run from; a very sexy, smart hero; a heroine with newly discovered courage; and a boatload of secrets. A contemporary romance with fun characters and a great start to a new series.
