User Names live on indefinitely, as do the messages posted here (like this one).
But you can remove your email address from the Book Clubs registration system, and thus "close" your account, by clicking on a "remove me" link at the bottom of one of our system emails (like the verification email you got when you created your account).
If you don't have one of those emails, you can get one by clicking the "Forgot Your User Name or Password?" link on the Registration page. After you enter your email address, you'll get a new system email, which will have a "remove me" link. (The link actually says "click here," but the result is the same.)
