I think I understand your frustrations. Some of what you're describing stems from the Sign In issues we're having, particularly in Firefox. That'll clear up the early part of next week.
You're not obligated to create My B&N content to participate in the Book Clubs. We hope you do, but the choice is yours. The only thing you really need is your Pen Name and an avatar. The Pen Name's done, obviously, but you will have to pick a new avatar soon.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Remember me isn't remembering me, even though I have let it set all the myriad cookies it asks to.

I hope it will allow automatic sign-in. Under the old BookClub system, Firefox's password system recognized the request for sign-in and automatically filled in my user name and password. But it doesn't recognize B&N's site sign-in, so I have to enter my email address and password by hand every time. I don't know what it takes to be recognized by Firefox's password system as a sign-in screen, but I hope your developers can figure that out! It is SO much more convenient not to have to type all that in every time.
Clicking "Remember Me" when you sign in should to the trick. That'll give you longer access to My B&N and the Book Clubs, but won't affect your Account information.
I think, therefore I drive people nuts.

Sorry, Everyman. This might be related to the sign in bug. We'll follow up with the developers to be sure.

Customer Reviews
This might not have anything to do with all these book club changes but there is no longer a Customer Review tab on any of the B&N books so you can only read the first two reviews now.

Hi Nadine,
Customer Reviews are temporarily de-activated for a few days while we make some technical changes to the site. They'll be back - with some new improvements - very soon!

So is the double sign in, which I'm STILL having due to firefox?

I have found a way to shorten it a bit and avoid the double sign-in.
When you click sign-in from the board you get the first sign-in box in which you have to enter your email and password. Don't. Click "create a new account" instead.
Then it brings up the second "sign-in" with your email address all filled in for you. You just have to put in your password.
That, of course, puts you into your account, but I booked-mark the main club board so I use that.
Then I click "sign-in" again to bring up my profile and to activate my sign-in. Simple, right!!!
See that cuts it down to only four steps with you only having to put in your password (and once).

Not the problem I'm having.
I go to my bookmarked sign in page, sign in. Then I have to imediately Sign in again. Go to book clubs section and then sign in again.

Same here.
Tonight I had to sign in four times.
But Jon has promised it will be fixed next week, and I have absolutely, complete faith in Jon's promises to do things right on schedule as promis.... wait a second. Wasn't the whole new BN supposed to start in September? Ah forget it. ![]()

This is exactly the problem most of us are having. The developers are working on it, and plan to have it straightened out on Tuesday.
In the meantime, we've offered up some streamlining instructions in the Announcements box that appears on every page of the Book Clubs site. ... We'll post the latest updates there so all can see them.
In the meantime, thanks for plowing through. We know it's a bit frustrating right now.

Kevin, your suggested bypass is simpler than mine. It works pretty well, especially with a bookmark to the "Browse all Clubs" page instead of using the Book Club button. You still have to click the "sign-in" on the club page to activate your sign-in but that is all.
Kevin's suggestion:
"In the meantime, we recommend clicking the Sign In link near the Barnes & Noble logo, and then clicking the Book Clubs button in the top navigation. We're sorry for the inconvenience, and expect the Sign In process to be streamlined by Tuesday."

Kevin, I do not normally visit the forums, so I am clueless. You say to learn more about the new ratings and review tools to go to "My B&N". I have no idea where this is....is it the same as "My Settings"? That page isn't helping me at all. Do you have any idea when they will restore ratings and reviews (the ones "outside" the forums on the product pages)? I'm missing that feature already!
Thanks....emmi

They have restored the B&N customer reviews but they are now a pretty slow load since they added a few more bells and whistles to it that I don't really understand -- some sort of rating system.
I agree "My B&N" is pretty hard to find and it isn't "My Settings". I was trying to remember how I set up my avatar and couldn't find it anywhere. My last resort was to try "My Account" information -- that is another sign-on to get to your actual B&N Account (billing type stuff) as opposed to your Book Club sign-in. They are apparently separate AND together! I can't tell you the specifics now but poke around there and see if you find something inspiring.
This is confusing to an old-timer like me. I can imagine how confusing it all is to a newcomer. Maybe that is why most newcomers, like you, don't have avatars -- you wouldn't begin to look for half this stuff even if you knew it was there. Actually, right now I would forget about "My B&N". You don't need it. Just join in discussions you are interested in and forget about it for now. I'm not bothering.

Welcome, emmi.
You're not missing anything, really. It's just that the full feature set My B&N is deploying over several days, and not everything is visible quite yet.
Just today, the customer review information was returned to the product pages (with the new ratings system). You can access the tool from there -- and you can also start a list from there as well.
On Wednesday, we'll add a My B&N tab up to the top navigation (you'll see it up there next to B&N Studio).
But in the meantime, you can get into the feature set by clicking here: Go to My B&N.

Things are starting to streamline - yay! - but I was wondering if I could add a "wish-list" request?
The sign-on process is working much, much better (helped probably by all the upgrades going live site-wide) but is there a way for the developers to integrate all the sign-ons? Like sign-in once on the BN.com main page and then you're signed in site-wide and don't have to click "sign-in" again you get to the forums page. Just an idea ![]()

Like almost every shopping site, I'm assuming that they don't want to leave us signed on to the BN book buying area for ever; it's normal, for security and to limit the number of carts they have to keep open, to close a buyer down after a period of time.
I assume what they're working on is to separate out the book clubs function from the buying function so they can close your buying account out but leave your book club section open, and when you sign back in can sign you back in just to the book club section with the remember me function. But I could have this all mixed up.
Anyhow, I agree that I don't want my buying page open all the time I'm working in the book clubs.

Here's basically how it works:
You are correct that you are not intended to be in your buying session for a long period of time - your buying session automatically times out after ~60 minutes. Your community session (i.e. using the book clubs) is set to also time out after 60 minutes unless you do some community-related activity - like responding to a post.
However, clicking "Remember Me" is supposed to change this and extend the session to 30 days (for community activities - not for your purchases, which will still time out after 60 minutes). There's currently a bug with "Remember Me" and its not working right now - but it will be fixed on Monday.

Marie,
Kevin addressed this in one of the Help threads, but the short answer is that the customer reviews are temporarily disabled to allow some website updates. They will be back soon.
emmi331 wrote:
Hi, everyone! This is my first time posting, and I may be in the wrong forum, so please be patient with me and point me to the right one if necessary. I am extremely unhappy with one recent change on the B&N website - the decision to eliminate customer reviews. I loved looking up books that interested me, reading what people thought (not just professional reviewers), and posting my own reviews. They are evidently phasing this out, as only the two most recent reviews are posted, and there is NO option to post a review yourself. There are other websites that encourage customer reviews, of course, but many of them have the "rate the reviewer" feature, which I dislike - how can you "rate" someone's opinion? I appreciated B&N not using this element, but alas, it looks like it's all being scrapped, in any case. I've already contacted Customer Service, and they replied that they will "forward the comments to the appropriate people, who will be interested"....Sure. And I'm Marie of Rumania. Is anyone else angry about this, or do y'all pretty much avoid customer reviews and just hang out here in the forums?
