Auth Prob

IE is giving me this error just to log in to the site. Anyone else having this problem tonite?

We're sorry, the link you clicked on requires "authentication," which has failed in this instance.
You can frequently fix this problem by hitting the back button of your browser and then refreshing the page you were on.

If that doesn't work, please be sure that your browser is set to accept cookies from bookclubs.barnesandnoble.com, and that your security software is set to accept referer information from this site. Please sign in and try again.

There are five main reasons this may happen:

1) The link you clicked on was not generated for you, but was intended only for someone else's use to perform an action on their account. If the other person pasted such a link into a message body or you were re-directed to such a link from another link you clicked, the authentication will fail and you will arrive here instead.

2) The link was valid for you, but your authentication ticket has expired. In this case, if you hit the back button in your browser, then refresh the page containing the link you clicked on, you will get a fresh ticket and then if you click on the link again it will work.

3) Your browser session may have expired. In this case, if you hit the back button in your browser, then refresh the page containing the link you clicked on, you will get a fresh ticket and then if you click on the link again it will work.

4) Your browser may be set to not accept session cookies (or the cookie may have been deleted, or you may have been prompted and refused the cookie), in this case you should modify your browser settings to accept session cookies, and/or accept the session cookie if you are prompted, in order to use this site.

5) Your browser arrived at this location from someplace other than this site (an external link or site), or your browser or security software may be set to not send referer information, in this case you should use the links on this site itself or verify that your browser or security software settings allow sending referer information, in order to use this site.

Re: Technical Questions

I just wanted to ask. Is there anyway that I could change my username or is there not a way to do it and that I got to stick with the one that I have?

Could you please let me know?

Thank You.

Re: Technical Questions

Hi HPB: You will find a lot of information about using the clubs if you click on the Help Button at the top left hand of the Home Page. You can't change your Username but you can create a new one by going to 'Register' before signing in with your old one. Create a new Username there and start posting with it - your old one will just remain unused.

Re: Technical Questions

I have a problem which may be because I have just upgraded to Firefox 2.0.0.1 or may be more general to other browsers.

The last line of posters signatures doesn't show clearly -- only the very top of the line shows, so i can see that there is supposed to be more, but it isn't legible.

Is this just a problem with Firefox, or are other people having this issue also? If it's just Firefox, I'll report it to them, but I want to check before doing so.

Re: Technical Questions

Everyman,

I'm a Firefox 2.0.0.1 (A Browser Odyssey) user too, but I haven't noticed this myself, but I'll look around.

You can edit posts up to 90 minutes after the initial posting, after that it's "as is." And only moderators and admins can delete posts. If you have good reason, you can PM them and ask to have it taken down.

Don't be in too big of a hurry to post something... think about it before you hit the "post message" button.

Re: Auth Prob

Kevin or Bill or whomever:

I finally resolved the authentication problem, I think. Now another question has emerged.

Once I'm in the topics list for a board, I can click the right side up-arrow to move a topic up to the upper section.

For example, in Literary Classics / British Classics I can more the Pride and Prejudice thread up to the top.

However, when I'm at the board level, I still see the right arrows, but clicking on them does nothing. For example, when I'm in the Literary Classics board, I can't move the Shakespeare Book Club up.

Is that because there's no upper section in that area? If that's the case, can you put an empty upper section there so I and others can move the topics we're interested in up to the top of the list?

Re: Auth Prob

Hey Everyman,

Glad you finally cleared up your authentication problems. As far as floating... floated boards only "float" to the main Book Clubs hompage. They appear between the Featured Book Clubs (the ones with book and author images) and dark green category links. They don't change positions within the category pages.

Thanks. I discovered that this morning.

Another little suggestion for whenever. Now that I have the authentication issue solved, which happened when we replaced Norton Internet Security Firewall with Windows Firewall, I am able to bookmark threads. But unless I'm missing something, this neat feature doesn't seem quite as useful as it might. In order to get to bookmarked threads, according to the Help menu, I have to go to my profile, then to bookmarks, then click on the thread. This isn't any faster or more convenient than going there from the main page or the drop-down menu.

I'm wondering whether, if you get time, you could put the user's bookmarks on the right side of the home page, as the messages are listed. I don't go to my PMs that often, and when I want to I can go to them directly through the letter icon, so having them listed, while a minor convenience in seeing what messages I have, isn't that much of a timesaver. Personally, I would much rather see my bookmarks there, giving me one-click access to the threads I most want to visit.

If they are put there, it would be most convenient if they were fairly high up on the side, so they would show when the page first comes up and not require scrolling down to find.

I know, I'm greedy. But maybe when your programmers have a quiet day they could look at this possibility?

Re: Auth Prob

Everyman,

You may not have scrolled down far enought to notice, but bookmarked threads also appear on the Homepage, at the very bottom, below the catergory listings.

Re: Technical Questions

Two days after I introduced myself to the Book Club, there was a message in my regular e-mail entitled "B & N Book Club Subscription." In it, there were 11 links from people who are also in the Book Club. However, when I click on the links that read "view message," I get a message that reads: "We're sorry, the link that brought you here no longer works. We apologize for the inconvenience." There are no messages in my B & N mail. How can I get that fixed, and, what is the best way to contact those who sent me an e-mail originally?

Re: Technical Questions

Suddenly I can no longer rely on my home page to tell me whether I have unread messages on another page. Some sprite has gotten in to deceive me and make my eyes and fingers work three times as much as they should have to. Is there a way to fix this? I'll be told I have eight unread messages on the English Classics page, and when I go there I can find none.
