I know I missed something in this book. I don't get the connection of all of the illustrations to the short text. i feel like there is something obvious I'm missing? Any help out there?

gabesmom--Have you finished the trilogy? (I assume you have if you're reading this one?).

Yes - I finished the trilogy shortly after The Amber Spyglass came out. So when Lyra's Oxford was published, I jumped at it. I don't understand the postcard sent by Mary Malone, or the cruise line reference to Smyrna (on a totally different topic I am reading middlesex and Smyrna is very important in that book.) The map of Oxford relates to the story. But I know I'm missing something!
