I wasn't sure where to put this but I think we need to mention something about the angels that become very im[ortant in this section of the book--especially Metatron:

In Jewish Midrash (sort of like lore) Metatron was an angel who rebelled against God and was cast out - similar to the Chritian Lucifer. He was not, however, ever a man. Neither would any angel - like Baruch, ever have been a human being. Pullman uses the Christian interpretation of Genesis's "Bnei Eilim" that angels came down and mated with the daughters of men. According to Jewish lore, however, these were sons of lords, not angels. The text does not use the Biblical Hebrew term for angels.
