MY EARLY LIFE~~SYLLABUS (JUNE 30, 2008 THROUGH AUGUST 24, 2008)

Here is the schedule for the ad hoc History Book Group:

For those of you interested, we will begin the AD HOC HISTORY BOOK CLUB with the Churchill book MY EARLY LIFE beginning the week of June 30. Right now, we know of three loyal History buffs, who will be joining: Oldesq, Timbuktu and Bentley. Anybody and everybody is welcome.

You can take it at any pace that pleases you, but here is a schedule for when we plan to open the links. Page numbers may vary from one publisher or edition to another; the titles remain the same. We plan to accomplish about 50 pages per week to allow everyone to have time and to be able to participate. Like we said before, everyone is invited to participate.

Oldesq has volunteered to be the ad hoc moderator which will be terrific. We are putting together a list of potential books for the next selection(s) and anybody can recommend a potential title.

MY EARLY LIFE is readily available from Barnes and Noble and other book seller locations. This discussion will start June 30th and will continue through the week ending Sunday, August 24th, a period of eight (8) weeks.

Folks, I have added this once again on its own thread with a new message subject header to help folks who are new to the group or this board. As everyone is aware (at least I hope they are); we do not control the look of this board. So even though I would prefer for the Featured Title to say My Early Life by Winston Churchill rather than Ladies of Liberty by Cokie Roberts which was last month's selection, we humble readers had no input or control of that cosmetic feature. Additionally we have absolutely no control of the threads which still appear above the line as the threads highlighted (the Ladies of Liberty selection is still there oddly).

Most of the time, reader moderators do have control of the look and feel; but since we are an ad hoc group and just trying to keep the History Book Club alive, none of those nice to haves were extended to us by B&N nor were the current threads included at the top of the shading.

So we are doing the best that we can with the tools we have and since we love history...here we are. The only prerequisite to joining us in this read is no prerequisite...just want to find out more about Churchill and his early life (that's enough for membership here).

Everybody is welcome and now the syllabus has its own thread; the first syllabus on the History Book Club site. This was published on June 8th; but has sort of gotten buried since then.

I hope you join us; there is plenty of time to catch up or go at your own pace. And we promise to post back. If anybody needs any further information on this selection or how to participate, feel free to post me. Hope this helps.

One final thing, Oldesq has graciously accepted the task of moderating this selection and is doing a great job.

Re: MY EARLY LIFE~~WHAT IF I DO NOT WANT TO ENCOUNTER SPOILERS: The Threads

[ Edited ]
There are two kinds of thread categories related to the MY EARLY LIFE discussion:

a) Non Spoiler Threads: The Weekly Chapter Threads

The weekly chapter threads are non spoiler threads and if you would like to read MY EARLY LIFE first before entering into supplemental discussions, then please be forewarned and remain on those threads only until you have completed the book. These threads include in the message subject area the following information: the title of the book, the chapters that the thread will be focused on, the dates that the discussion will initially begin and when the end date will be which is usually the day before the next chapter thread is open for discussion, followed by the page numbers. As we have stated, you can go along at your own pace, but we are moving through the selection in tandem with the syllabus outline. Please refer to the syllabus for further guidelines.

b) Spoiler Threads: The Supplemental Topic Oriented Threads

There are a number of supplemental threads which have already been opened up for discussion. These are not non spoiler threads and discussion may take place regarding topics found within MY EARLY LIFE and other books related to Winston's parents or other people, places and events in Churchill's life. These threads are available for all in depth discussions on the designated thread topics.

Hope this helps explain the two categories of threads.

Bentley
