"Years later, General Paik Sun Yup, commader of the South Korean First Division (and considered by the Americans the best of the Korean commanders), remembered his own uneasiness as they moved forward without resistance. There was a sense of almost total isolation, as if they were too alone." - page 13

Re: The Coldest Winter: Who's Who: Brigadier General Charles Willoughby (page 15)

"From there, it was sent on to Brigadier General Charles Willoughby, Douglas MacArthur's key intelligence chief, a man dedicated to the proposition that there were no Chinese in Korea, and that they were not going to come in, at least not in numbers large enough to matter. That was what his commander believed, and MacArthur's was the kind of headquarters where the G-2's job was first and foremost to prove that the commander was always right." - page 15

Re: The Coldest Winter: Who's Who: Lieutenant General Walton Walker (page 16)

"Lietenant General Walton Walker, commander of the Eighth Army, had requested authority from MacArthur to divert all further shipments of bulk-loaded ammunition from Korea to Japan. MacArthur approved the request and ordered six ships carrying 105-and 155mm artillery shells diverted to Hawaii. An army that had spent much of the previous four months starved for ammunition now felt it had too much." - page 16

Re: The Coldest Winter: Who's Who: Anybody Left Out

I just want to say that I have looked up everyone's name who is mentioned and with some folks I have not been able to find anything for whatever reason. If someone else has any information to add on these individuals, please feel free to add.

Everyone mentioned in the Halberstam's book deserves to be researched and remembered. And I do not want anybody to think that I would leave them out, etc. for any other reason.

I am currently looking for additional background information for Part I.

Re: The Coldest Winter: Who's Who: Lieutenant General Matthew B. Ridgway - page 43

[ Edited ]
In defense of MacArthur:

"As Lieutenant Matthew B. Ridgway noted later, when the Chinese had first struck, MacArthur had seen it as a calamity and had sent a message to Washington protesting any limitations on bombing over the Yalu. The ability of the Chinese to cross those bridges, he said, "threatens the ultimate destruction of the forces under my command." - page 43
