These are not historical, but good on Native Americans.  Read anything by Tony Hillerman.

The Journey of Crazy Horse  by Joseph M. Marshall III is one of the best narratives regarding the Native Americans of the plains.  Marshall is also a Lakota so he brings a very interesting perspective to his story.  The book is about Crazy Horse but tells a great deal about the Sioux way of life.  Be prepared for a totally different telling of what happened at the Little Big Horn than what you probably have heard.

There are two works of nonfiction you might want to read.  Helen Hunt Jackson wrote "A Century of Dishonor" in 1881.  She wrote it in hopes of helping to force changes in government polices.

"Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" by Dee Brown was published in the early 1970s, and covered the displacement of the Plains Indians from 1860-1890

Look for the writings of Louise Erdich and Susan Power.

Wikipedia provides this list of Native American authors.

Waterlily is a great book.  I read it for my college course "South Dakota Indian Studies."  It is in story form.

Just read a fictional book called "Into the Wilderness" by Sara Donati.  Excellent book and if you enjoy it, there are four books after it to continue the series.
