I'm fascinated by the story of Chagall's years in Russia during World War I and the Russian Revolution and by Jonathan's depiction of what happened to his work over those years. I found the line "Chagall is thirty-five, he has become famous in Europe, but he does not know this, and many in Berlin and Paris believe he is dead" deeply moving. Absolutely chilling, and especially to think of the peril he will then face in Paris.
