Re: Jenks ***MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS***

[ Edited ]
Well from what I remember, Pixies have a very fast metabolism. They remind me of a sentient hummingbird and have some similar traits. They can move very fast and have exceptional agility. This enables them to dodge most attacks. This is a good thing because the are also very fragile, with the wings being their weakest point.

They have exceptional hearing, especially for high frequency noises. They can hear lots of things most normal sized people can't or filter out. Pixies hear things like fluorescent lights, electronic whines associated with computers, key boards, security cameras, electronic switching devices, dog whistles, maybe even pacemakers and just about anything else like that. Their hearing would be similar to a bat's in many ways.

Pixies also seem to have a knack for learning. If something interest them, they will learn all they can about it. Jenks is one of the few Pixies that can read and write. He taught Jax how in less than a month I believe.

They also seem to have a stealth mode. When it's used, they are all but invisible. This ability makes them excellent scouts and allows them easy access into the most secure of spaces. Combined with their other skills and senses, they also make great thieves or thieves assistants.

The Pixie dust they drop is their way of perspiring. They don't seem to sweat the way 'big people' do. They seem to have the ability to change the make up of their dust to have it do different things like 'Pixing' someone for example.

When Pixing someone, they will drop their dust on someone. The Pix version of the dust is similar to itching powder. Some people may be highly sensitive to it and have more severe reactions to it including boils blisters or rashes that may last a couple of weeks.

Another use for the dust is to convey emotions and moods. Happy Pixies may shower an area with colorful dust that catches the light. When at with others, this may resemble a small fireworks display.

The dust may also be used to help plants grow I think. Pixies survive by taking care of a garden. The bigger the garden, the 'richer' the Pixie is. It allows them to have more offspring with fewer of their young dyeing off. Pixies are ferocious when it comes to defending their gardens. It's a matter of life and death for them. Poachers or looters will be killed on sight.

A traveling Pixie must wear a red cloth to indicate they are not poachers. I think there's a reason for the red cloth. In away it's like the orange vests a hunter wears. Pixies by nature are very stealthy. They do see red very well though and wearing it nullifies their stealthiness somewhat. No poacher would wear it because he'd be too easy to see.

Pixies are mischievous and curious by nature. They seen to like to get into stuff to see how it works. They seem a little 'accident' prone and break stuff. They don't do it with any kind of malicious intent, unless it's someone they don't like.

Most Pixies do not involve themselves in 'big people' affairs. Jenks is an exception to that rule. He's made friends with Ivy and Rachel and is exceptionally loyal to them. This became even more so after Rachel treated him lie a real person and invited him to join her and gave him the large garden at the church to live in.

Some drawbacks to being a Pixie are sensitivity to cold. If the get too cold they slow down to the point where they can't fly. Eventually they pass out and can die soon after. Generally they seek out warm places in the winter to hibernate.

Being small as they are, the cannot carry much weight. Everything they use has to be scaled down to their size. Their size also makes them vulnerable to aggressive birds and predators like cats.

I would also think that since they have such good hearing, certain sounds or frequencies may be harmful to them.

Almost forgot communication skills. They have at least 3 ways to communicate. When talking to each other, they tend to sound like an audio tape on fast forward. A big person can't understand it.

Pixies can slow things down and speak loudly enough for a big person to hear them. They'd be sort of useless if they couldn't.

When acting covertly or the want to convey certain signals to everyone at once, they can use their wings to produce various "wing chirps". These can be as loud or soft as needed and can mean many different things.

Well that's about all I can remember about them for now. I'm sure I forgot something.

Re: How do you think Jenks will be saved?***MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS***

[ Edited ]
Wow! Impressive, Vampyre...

I guess the only other thing I can think of is the 'hypnotic and soothing' affects that Pixies seem to have over Elves and kitties. Remember at the wedding rehearsal dinner, the affect Jenks seemed to have over the bride-to-be's mother - not sure what that was all about, but it was a very interesting 'scene'. Not sure why he/they seem to affect the cat this way - seems to be more than the typical 'fast-moving-smaller-object-than-myself-so-I-chase-it' thing.

I do have another question: do Pixies heal faster than others? I seem to remember that Jenks was wounded very badly in one story line and Jenks' wife, Matalina, was able to help him in some magical way. Didn't she do the same for Rachel when Rachel almost bled to death after a particular nasty battle? May be thinking of the Pixie Princess living across the street...

Re: How do you think Jenks will be saved?***MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS***

Thanks,

They may have some curative magic in their dust. I don't know. The dust does seem to have a lot of uses depending on what they want to do with it.

I think Pixies would also have an accelerated healing factor. More likely due to their high metabolism than anything else. Jenks has had many battle injuries in the past so his wife has had plenty of practice patching him up.

Seems like the most common injury is wings getting torn or bent out of shape. While this could be very bad for the pixie, they seem to heal very fast as well.

I found the whole interaction with the Elves very strange. The woman was sort of dazed and amazed by Jenks. He clearly wanted nothing to do with her though. I don't know if he felt threatened by her or if he was just as puzzled by her actions as I was.

I have asked Kim about this before here and on her comments page and she isn't telling. Guess we'll have to wait and see if we learn anymore about that in the books to follow.

Re: How do you think Jenks will be saved?***MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS***

I am truly impressed! As I read all that you remembered about pixies a lot of the details started coming back to me. I hope that if you are ever on Jeopardy that there is a pixie category, you would wipe out the whole category all on your own...my hat is off to you Vampyre! :smileyhappy: Thanks!!

Ps: Kim, is that what you were going to say, or do you have other information to add?

I know that it is a little off the subject, but are pixies allowed to buy/use charms? If they can't who else can?

Re: How do you think Jenks will be saved?***MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS***

They can except for one thing. The charms are too big for them to lug around. Rachel said something about looking into making some pixie sized charms for Jenks.

Re: How do you think Jenks will be saved?***MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS***

Nope far from it. I have huge gaps in my memory about many of the plot elements. On the other hand, I am very interested in the pixies and the vampires. I like comparing them to ones I've read about in other books. The Hollows vampires are very different than any of the others I've read. I like that.

I don't like the elves too much so I don't remember as much about them either. They are just a hateful egotistical self serving screw the rest of the world group.

The Weres are pretty cool but I've not seen too many differences in them and others I've read about yet. Therefor they don't stand out to me like the pixies and Vampires do.

Witches are also unique here so they stand out as does their magic. Having to make charms instead of casting 'mana' based magic is very different. Then again, tapping a ley line is very similar to 'mana' based magic but also very different.

I also sort of skip over the 'love' scenes. (duck and cover duck and cover) I do appreciate they are generally PG-13'ish. Imagination counts for something here.

I also forget names of the supporting characters a lot of times.

It's a good thing my modesty prevents me from telling you just how great I am. Enough about me now. We are here to show our appreciation to our favorite author. Since Stephen King isn't here, we'll have to settle for Kim Harrison.

Yes I am joking, please don't ban me.

:smileyhappy: A little modest are we Vampyre...Well you shouldn't be. I am glad to see more people joining our discussion. I popped over to the website yesterday and found that Kim has been posting there a lot! I hope she keeps coming back here, I can't decide which forum I like the most. This one seems easier to have several different discussions at once and keep track of them.
Anyhow...since this is a Jenks thread...Do you think that Jenks seems to be giving up since he fears the end of his life is near? Assuming that he gets to live longer how do you think that he will cope with it?

Re: How do you think Jenks will be saved?***MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS***

I'm pretty sure Jenks will live on for some time to come. He wont be the same though. I don't think his wife will live much longer and her death will make him miserable and us to I think.

Her death could change jenks in all kinds of ways. Besides remorse and grief, he'll probably feel survivor's guilt as well. He may lose the will to live or become a honey-holic and become very depressed. He is in for a hard time if he lives.

One thing that may make him feel a little better is if Jax came back for good. There could be a lot of friction there as well. Jax will have to prove himself to his father before being accepted again, I think.

Re: How do you think Jenks will be saved?***MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS***

Well from what I remember honey gets a pixie drunk. One of the funniest Jenks moments is when strongly he declares he can hold his honey. The idea of a little four inch tall winged guy staggering around my table top just had me rolling.

Vampyre,

Good observations regarding Jenks after his wife dies. I wonder though, if being the sole caretaker of the children won't make him hide the honey-jar from himself.

Re: How do you think Jenks will be saved?***MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS***

Ooops, I thought it was four. Oh well, no matter, he'd still be a funny drunk.

If anything will save him, it will be his love and sense of responsibility to his kids.

Everytime I see hoop ear rings I think of him riding in Rachel's.
