How old?

Hi. I was just wondering how old vampires can be before they die of old age? I already know that elves and witches live to like 150 and pixies live to 20. And how old is Rachel's mom? And what is her name?

Hi Tonic,

Do you mean living vampires, or the dead ones? The living vamps are basically humans, so they have the same limitations, agewise. Maybe a little longer because of the vamp virus, but their lifestyle pretty much evens it out. Dead ones live until someone takes them out or they go insane and walk into the sun.
Rachel's mom is in her fifties, I think? Her name is Alice.

Now, in other author's worlds, the rules change. ;-)

What exactly happens to make a living vampire a dead vampire? Who can do this to them? Can they make this change on their own by say...passing naturally, or must someone actually kill them? What can a dead vampire do exactly?

OK, I think I know the answer to some of this so if you don't mind, I'll tell you what I think I know.

First there are the high born living vamps like Ivy and her sister. They were born this way. Then there are the low born living vamps like Dennon. They get made by an undead I think. I don't think a living vamp can make a low born but I may be wrong.

Now when a high born vamp dies their first death, they automatically become an undead vamp like Ivy's mom. They have all their old memories and some personality traits but they lose their soul. I believe this makes them darker and less fuzzy than before. More animal like and much less human.

If a low born dies, he needs to be assisted by a high born to become undead. If assistance is not given within a specified time, they just stay dead forever.

The undead vamps like Ivy's mom are more like your classic vampires from the horror novels. They are much stronger and faster than humans, even more so than the living vamps. They have several mind control abilities that are much stronger than the living vampire's. While I think they can still eat normal food, it doesn't do them any good, they must have blood to survive. They don't need a lot, but they do have to have it regularly.

Tanning is a no no unless they want to do a Johnny Storm(Human Torch) impression. They become more nocturnal due to this and spend most of the day resting in safe lightproof areas that are usually kept secret.

Lastly undeads are virtually immortals. They can live as long as they want to. As Kim said, the living vampires are pretty much human with a slightly longer life span and weaker versions of the undeads abilities.



This is all part of The Hollows version of vampires and unique to this series.

I don't think all living vamps become undead. Remember how Piscary said that he wasn't sure Kist would be strong enough to become undead? So maybe only the strong become undead.

That's true. He may have other plans for Kist or meant something else entirely. He may have meant that Kist is too 'human' to ever endure as a souless more animalistic undead. Not all vamps do well when they transition to their undead state. They sometimes go insane and decide to take a little walk during daylight hours.

Right or wrong, you are certainly a wealth of information! I am amazed at how many small details you can remember...I thought that I had a good memory, but I guess not I agree that Ivy's mom seems more like the vampires that you see on TV. She is rarely mentioned, and when she is, it is like Ivy is embarrassed by her. I know that she gets her blood from Ivy's dad, but is it only from him? I can't remember how and when she actually became undead, and I've addicted someone else to the books so I don't have them right now. How did it happen? I wonder if we will ever see more of her in future books, what do you guys think?

I think in the books several times, it's mentioned that in order to keep from feeding off innocents , undeads have a blood contract with at least one person. They will feed off these people exclusively and they generally don't need to take very much at any one time. I'm pretty sure Ivy's mom feeds of her dad exclusively.


It's odd, I can remember a lot of details but I forget names too easily. guess I'm not much of a people person.

Yes, these vampires are certainly unique to those found in other series and shows. That's why we all love them so much! Kim has a great imagination!

All authors have their own version of vampires. Anne Rice vampire's are not the same as Brahm Stoker's or Joss Wheadon's. They of course have many things in common, like the need for human blood to survive but even that has many variations depending upon who wrote the book or the screen play. I just thought it was a good idea to point out the Denizens of the Hollows are unique for newer readers.

Works for me. I was just surprised to see you post that late. Don't think I'm stalking you but I have noticed you usually are more of a morning person.
