This is a great choice for children who have an understanding of (or are beginning to learn) how stories are constructed. Wacky and ingenious, Chloe and the Lion by Mac Barnett, pictures by Adam Rex, will have them chuckling over the wisecracking dialogue and poring over the innovative mixed-media artwork. (My favorites include the pages where Adam uses his powers as an illustrator to draw a pink bow on Mac’s head, put him in a sheriff’s costume, and stuff him in a gorilla suit.) Adults, too, will appreciate the clever humor and won’t mind rereading this one. Bravo, Mac and Adam! I can’t wait to see what this dynamic duo dreams up next.

Can you think of other books that get kids thinking about how stories are constructed? Do share!

Sandy, it was just this weekend that I put together that the same guy was writing all my favorite picture books. Mac Barrett's work has such a broad spectrum that I hadn't realized he was the creator of so many of my favorite books. Have you seen Oh No! Not Again! about a precocious overachiever who goes back in time to change history to get an A on her history test with whacky results. It can be found in the picture book section, but is definitely friendly towards older readers.

I know exactly what you mean! Mac Barnett wrote Extra Yarn (published early this year) but you wouldn't know it from the book--they're so different. The only thing they have in common is the clever humor/out-of-the-box thinking. I haven't seen Oh No! Not Again!--but it sounds great. Definitely going to check it out.
