80s or 90s horror novel about a back woods inbred family?

This was written probably in the late 80s or early 90s. A man (a detective, I think) and his wife/girlfriend when back to his home town for whatever reason. And many of the people in the town were inbreed and they looked strange--misshaped feature and whatnot. There was something about a rock quarry. The woman was swimming in it and some of these inbred men were lusting after her. Turns out that the husband was part of this family and he freaked out or something and went on some kind of rampage.
