A book I should've gotten years ago

I don't remember the title or author, but the plot goes like this:  a famous actress beloved in public but an abusive drunk in private is killed by her daughter, who was protecting herself and her younger half-brother.  The girl (who narrates the story) gets arrested anyway.  For a while, her ex-stepfather -- the half-brother's father -- reenters their lives and tries to help her, but when it turns out the brother has suppressed the abuse and doesn't want to have anything to do with her, the stepfather winds up having to choose his own kid over her.  She's convicted of manslaughter, but because of who she is, she ends up serving a short time in jail and, when released, enters into a relationship with the ex-stepfather's son by his first marriage, who seems to be decent enough.  But then, she gets pregnant, the guy makes it clear he wasn't serious about them, intends to let nothing stand in the way of studying pre-med, and wants her to get rid of it.  Instead, she begins the process of changing her identity, has the baby, and intends to raise it (making a point of not disclosing whether she had a son or daughter) free of her family -- at the end, the story turns out to be a manuscript anonymously delivered to a publisher in response to news of another book being written about the murder.

This should be more than enough information for a search.

Found it!

Got some of the plot details wrong, but I found it -- Perfidia by Judith Rossner.
