The general plot is about a boy named Dominique, who lives in a tribe. The trial of manhood in this tribe is telling a story to the tribe that is believed to be delivered to the teller by the gods. Dominique stands in the center of the rings of fellow tribesmen, but no story comes to his mind. After failing to tell a story, he is exiled from the tribe, cast out to fend for himself, alone.
Later in the story, he befriends some sort of bird. I also remember him fighting a sort of giant in a subterranian cave. And during most of the book, he seeks out a witch or sage, who he finds in the end.
I read this bookabout 8 years ago. The cover of it has a purple tint to it, and there is a sequel, which has a green tint to it. I don't know the title, author, or publisher. It is a fantasy book.
