..About a kid who grows up realizing he is one of the few people in his village to see color.
Hello everyone 
I'm beeing tortured by not finding this book for what seems like forever... Finally I decided to try to get help ^^
A longer while ago (as a teenager), I read a book describing a society of people. Here's some info on the plot, I would love to be able to reread it!:
The protagonist was a child who was coming of age and was getting ready to get a role in the society.
The role would get picked by wiser elders depending on the characteristics of the children, so their role would fit their personality.
One role I remember for sure was 'Birthgiver' (not exact name) which would be women who would be exceptionally good for birthing babies. (I think there were also farmers/teachers/hunters, but I'm not sure which of these, I just remember the birthgiver role for sure..)
Children would get 'adoptive' parents who took care of them and fed them, but they had teachers to learn stuff from, and (from what I remember) it wasn't really the parent's job to teach. Also parents normally wouldn't give birth to 'their own' children.
Essentially the protagonist would start seeing shimmers and things where nobody else would.
One of the elders would pick up on this fact, and it would become very important:
The reason is because almost nobody in the society saw these shimmers.
The elder explains to the kid, that these shimmers were actually colors, (and I think he trains him to see the colors better.)
Eventually the kid leaves the village (possibly to discover the colors in the world.)

Is there any chance anybods thinks this sounds familiar with a book they know?

Damn, I'm feeling pretty giggly on the inside now that I know which book it is The suspense of not knowing has been lifted and replaced with the anticipation and suspense of knowing I finally get to read it again ^^
