I read this book series in about 3rd grade, so it wasn't a particulary dark or difficult series, though my reading level is higher than most of my peers, so it's possible it could be of a higher reading level. Now I'm in 9th and have been searching for these books for a long time. The only title that comes to mind is Circle of Magic, but it isn't the 4 book series. There's seven books. In the first on he is an apprentice studying magic. There is a sword called the Summoning Sword, it is only to be used to summon creatures or something that is summoned. Ther eis a demon or something evil that he uses the sword to kill, but he uses the sword as a normal sword and is cast out, this happens near the end of the first book. He is given the task to trek to a tower high on a mountain to meet with a higher ranked magician to redeem himself. I want to say he makes it but the magician refuses to give him redmption right away. I cannot remember anything from books 3-6 which is part of the reason I wan't to reread these books. I remember in the seventh book I believe he is in some alternate dimension or some magical area in the middle of a battle. I remember that a unicorn is involved and that it stabs someone in the chest to kill them. This is the scene on the cover of the 7th book. Also the cover of the second book is the tower. It is a tall gray tower and a slope leading to it. The view point is from slightly off to the side of the base of the slope. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I really want to reread this series

I've found a Circle of Magic Series by Debra Doyle and James MacDonald. Could they be the ones?
#1 School of Wizardry
#2 Secret of the Tower (Tournment and the Tower)
#3 The Wizard's Statue (City by the Sea)
#4 The Prince's Players (Danger in the Palace)
#5 The Prisoners of Bell Castle
#6 The High King's Daugher
These were the only ones I could find and several volumes had more than one title. It looks like they are currently out of print.

Those would be them. Funny how different my recollection of them is, I think my memories might have bled together with Marina. Anyway, thank you so much for this. I'm gonna have to try and get my hands on these somehow. It's funny I remember reading all the books but can't remember any of the storyline past the first book. THank you so much for this.
