All I can remember is that there is an evil demon (or something) that has been imprisoned in an old tree. The tree is now dying and the demon is about to be released. The hero is a young boy, and I believe that he has a familiar in the form of some type of small animal, but I can't remember what exactly. Maybe a ferret.
Takes place in the present, and the book is not very old.
