Children's book: two boys crossing a scary covered bridge

I'm looking for a children's book suitable for 10-12 years old, maybe a little older and was available early to mid-1970s.

The plot centers around two boys (possibly brothers) who are too scared to cross a covered bridge at night because of a monster they might encounter. I think the monster was short & round with arms & legs, like a ball with limbs.

Does anyone know what book this is?

The only children's story I can think of about a "monster" under a bridge is the classic "Three Billy Goats Gruff" which has been around a long time.  Probably not what you're looking for though. Just thought I would throw it out there.

Yeah, definitely not 'Three Billy Goats Gruff'. :-)

Closer more to 'Sleepy Hollow', encountering a 'creature' out in the dark. That's why I think it happened on a covered bridge.

Just been informed on another lost-book forum that this book is:

The Spooky Thing, by William O. Steele, published 1960 by Harcourt Brace
