Cover: Black Horse With Bat Wings Flying In The Clouds

I am trying to remember a book I started reading when I was in high school. The cover was had a black horse with bat wings flying in the clouds. I remember the beginning was about a boy who lived on a farm and found a baby horse in his barn. The horse was like the one on the cover, black with bat wings.

I seem to remember that the boy was scared since the special horses were forbidden by the king and if anyone caught him with it he would be killed.

The special horses were meant to be raised and ridden into war, I think.

I can't remember much else from it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
