Danger on the High Seas of the Atlantic

[ Edited ]

This book vividly describes the dangers (modern) of sailing on the high seas of the Atlantic, including storms at sea.

I first read it at the recommendation of a teacher when I was in high school in the 1960's.  I don't remember whether it was a classroom assignment or that teacher's attempt to broaden the perspective of a Midwestern who had never seen the sea at that point in her life (or even a body of water that she couldn't see across).  It left an indelible impression of the dangers of the ocean, in particular the Atlantic (northern?). For some incomprehensible reason, I think the author's name may have begun with M.

I did run across the book a few years ago at a used book sale in paperback, which I believe it was at the time I read it.  Don't ask me why I didn't buy it then, or at least adequately capture its name. As I recall, the cover had a picture of a large ship in the midst of danger.

It was not the story about a specific ship, such as the Titanic or the SS Andrea Doria.  My recollection was that it was more about a working ship than a passenger liner, perhaps even a military ship, but there my memory fails certainty.  I believe it was a work of fiction.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.  It would indeed be fun if I can reconstruct this memory that now comes back to me every time I visit the spot where I could have recaptured it fully and did not!

Doesn't anyone have any ideas?

Sorry, I don't read sailing books unless they involve pirates.

:smileyvery-happy:  I have a friend who reads pirate tales -- whenever I spot a new title that looks enticing, I pass it on to her!

You are right, this was not a tale about pirates; more about storms at sea and maybe some military concerns.

Yeah I've been hooked on them since I was a kid. Hard to grow up in NC with family from areas of pirate homeland shores and at least not have a pirate ancestor somewhere in you. They're our folk heroes.

Every once in awhile I resurrect this in hopes someone new to this board might have a suggestion!  Thanks!

PS -- there may have been a plane flying over the ship on the cover.

Re: Danger on the High Seas of the Atlantic

This is a very long shot, because you said that this book is not about a specific ship, but is there any chance you're thinking of H.M.S. Ulysses by Alistair MacLean?  A lot of other things you said fit:  the author's last name begins with M; the cover has a picture of a large ship in danger; it takes place in the Atlantic; storms are one of the dangers; it's a work of fiction about a military ship; and, lastly, it was written in 1955 and so might have been recommended by a high school teacher in the 1960's.

As I said, it's a long shot, but, since there are some books from my childhood and teens that I would give almost anything to have back, I understand how you feel!  :smileyhappy:
