There's a kid, he herds these weird sheep things. He's too old for it, but he does it because he's a bit of a loser.
Suddenly, water stops flowing to the river. He goes with some brave people to the Witch's house. The Witch throws a stick at him, and it turns out to be a map up the mountain that only shows up when he's holding it.
They go up the mountain, facing various ethical challenges. Each strong adventurer falls to one of them, except the kid. He does something with the dragon at the top of the mountain and water flows again.
Then there are other books. I only read the first five. Or four. In one of them he saves some fish people. In the last one I read he goes across the ocean to defeat some werid people invading his home.
I only read five, but I found out later there are something like 30 of them. I must read them. They were my absolute favorite.
