I'm looking for a book that came out about 10 years ago I believe. It was a fantasy book about a woman/young girl who learns to use magic and becomes a wizard/sorcerer (whatever this world's term for magic user is). The man that teaches her doesn't think she'll be able to do it, but teaches her anyways. The thing about this world is that only men become serious magic users, though females might dabble in herbs/potions. From what I remember, the reason only men become serious magic users was there was something you had to do that they didn't think woman could do. I believe it was something like give up your own life force to magic in order to use it. The few women that tried to do this all died in the attempt. I believe some men die in the attempt as well. The first part of the book was about the female protagonist learning how to use magic. In the latter half of the book, I believe the woman returned to the city/castle where she tried to grow in power politically. I also think this book might have been the first in a series. Some of these details might be a little wrong as it's been awhile since I've read it.
