Help! I can't remember author or title of a book I read as a child

As a 5th & 6th grader in late 70's (I'm 41, female), I read a certain book several times, and unfortunately can't remember the title of author.

What I can remember is that a young girl (prob. 10-12 yrs; can't remember her name- I'll call her Mary) lived with an evil witch who made Mary do all of the work around the house after school while she ( evil witch) slept all day and did whatever she did outside of the house at night. Mary was brought up by the evil witch, and always assumed this was her mother. Mary also had a mirror in which every now and then she would catch a glimpse of a beautiful woman. One day, when she saw the beautiful woman in the mirror, Mary said aloud, "Oh, how I wish you were my real mother." These words broke a spell that the evil witch had cast over the beautiful woman, who turned out to be Mary's real mother. She told Mary this and they lived happily ever after (one assumes!), without the witch, of course.

I read this in the late 70's, however it could have been published at least 10 years before that time period. If any one remembers reading this, and remembers the author and/or title, I'd love to know.

Thank you, Dawn22

DAWN22 - Seems like everybody loved this book! Minx was the little girl's name. Do you remember the flowerpots in the window that were actually children under a spell? This is "Little Witch" by Anna Elizabeth Bennett, copyright 1953, but in print for many years, however, it is getting tougher to find a copy.

Re: Help! I can't remember author or title of a book I read as a child

Can anyone help me with this book. It was a wonderful little book I found in the "new age" section of B & N. It's not fiction, it's an introspection from a man who gave up a lucrative job in the advertising world to live as a sort of Beach bum. He's very clear about how difficult it actually is to live with all that time on your hands. It's funny, his name was something close to Richard Bach (i think, could be wrong), and his writing was very much like Richard Bach.. introspective, clear, poetic and simple. Anyone remember this book?? I'd love to get a copy of it.

Amazing! That was the first book I thought of in relation to this forum, and luckily, you remembered the plot a whole lot better than I did! Thanks!!
