Help finding book title.

I read a book a few years ago and cannot remember the title. It begins with the main character as a boy. He has a bad fever and I think something happened with his ear. After that he has visions of violent/horrific events that have happened while he is in the places where they occurred. Like if someone was raped in an alley and he is in the alley he will have a vision of what happened. I think the first time it happened he was playing in a junked car and he slammed the door and had a vision of something that happened in the car many years ago. His family lives close to a drive in move theater and he sits at the window and watches the movie. He has a childhood female friend that moves away. Then when he is older he is afraid due to these flashbacks and takes the same route everyday to school and work. He puts egg cartons on his walls to avoid any flashbacks. He meets a man who's wife and child died because he was late picking them up. The man is a karate instructor (or something like that). He and this man become friends and the man showed him how to control his flashbacks.
