Late 80s/early 90s children's horror author

I've been trying to find an author I enjoyed as a kid for years now and haven't had any luck.  I don't remember a lot about his/her books, but I know he had probably 3 or 4 horror books aimed at children/young adults.  They all had a similar look, very simple covers with a single color and a moderately spooky illustration and the font reminds me of the font used on this book cover:

I only vaguely remember 2 of his books.

One was black, and the story reminded me a lot of Stephen King's Needful things, though obviously aimed at a younger crowd.  It involved a magician or some other mysterious trickster, coming to town and selling people what their heart desired, or something along those lines.

The second was blue, and I remember even less.  it may have had something to do with a magical potion or something like that.

Hopefully this rings a bell for someone?  I'd love to track this author down.

Are you looking for the Goosebumps series authored by R. L. Stine? I remember those being popular in the early '90's.

No, I'm pretty sure this was nothing like the Goosebumps series.  Whereas those were brightly colored paperbacks and there were dozens of them, this author's books were hardcover, had a subtler look to them, and I don't think he was nearly as prolific.  Like I said, I only remember him having maybe 4 books out, but they all had similar cover designs.

Thanks for the comment, but I remember these as well, and these aren't what I'm looking for.  What I'm thinking of were definitely novels, not compilations.

Were they Christopher Pike's YA horror novels?

Nope, like Goosebumps, Christopher Pike had a ton of books out and they were kind of trashy-looking paperbacks.  These were a bit more obscure, and had a distinctive art style on the cover, something a little classier, which gave the books a mysterious, supernatural impression, as opposed to the kind of blatant, cheesy horror of the Goosebumps and Pike books.  Thanks though!

This is a very long shot, since the book I'm thinking of isn't horror, but the first book you're looking for reminds me of The Man Who Was Magic, 1966, by Paul Gallico.  It's about a magician who comes to a town inhabited solely by magicians.  The first trick he performs for them is to un-scramble an egg.  The townspeople realize that it isn't possible to un-scramble an egg.  In other words, this guy must somehow be able to perform real magic, not the trickery they perform, and, if that's true, he would be a terrible threat to them because he could put them all out of business, especially if he's not the only real magician in the world.  Then he starts to go all over town giving people what they really want.   Then the mayor's daughter starts to fall in love with him, and the story begins to meander, and 12-year-old me lost interest, so much older me doesn't remember how the book ended, but it seems to resemble the first book you're looking for.

Regardless, good luck with your search; I know how frustrating it can be to really want to recover a treasure, especially from childhood, but no longer be able to remember something you used to be able to recall effortlessly!

I don't think that's the one as I can't find any versions of it that look even close to what I remember and I'm pretty sure my book was a little newer at the time when I was young, i.e. late-80s, early-90s.  That's a good guess though and an interesting sounding book.  Thanks so much for trying.

Hi. I think the book you are looking for is called The Wish Giver by Bill Brittain. There were a couple other books by him about the same town, but I couldn't remember enough about them to find them. Mope this helps!
