Looking for a Book on a fictional Assassination Plot on Adolf Hitler

Hi, I'm looking for a book that I've read in the 80's and I don't know the author or the title but only so much of the plot:

It was an assassination plot on Adolf Hitler that was to be carried out by a German POW that had managed to escape from a British POW-Camp. For that he should be decorated by Hitler himself with a very high decoration. At the ceremony he was to kill Hitler. What the Germans didn't know was that the POW was substituted by a British agent.

Another twist in the plot was also that they had to fake appendicitis with the German POW because the agent had his appendix removed as kid so that the news of the appendectomy would be refered back to Germany.

I think the assassination attempt was foiled at the last minute, but I'm not sure.

Maybe somebody knows the title of this book.
