Looking for the name of a book!!!

Years ago I came across a book that I never got to finish and I cannot remember who wrote it or what it is called. What I do remember is the first couple of pages which took place in the woods where something was chasing a deer. I got the impression that the "thing" had somehow been genetically changed due to toxic waste or something to that effect. That is pretty much all I remember. Any help would be appreciated. (The book is not a true story either) Thanks!

I'm going to take a stab in the dark here.  Is it

Fledgling by Octavia Butler?  It doesn't involve toxic waste, but it does open with a mysterious person/creature chasing down a deer in the woods.
