Prehistoric times, girl raises orphaned wolf, wants to be allowed to hunt like a man.

I read this book back in elementary school and can't remember the author or title. The plot was about a prehistoric girl who finds an orphaned wolf pup and raises it in secret, without the aproval of her parents. The girl wants to be allowed to hunt like the men of her tribe. When the wolf is discovered, she runs away with it to stop her tribe from killing it (I think). She learns to survive with the help of the wolf and together they kill a giant cave bear and bring the meat back to her tribe. (It may have been a mammoth that they killed, but the bear was involved somehow.) Does anyone know what this book is?

Sounds a little like Clan of the Cave Bear, 1980, by Jean M. Auel.  I don't remember a wolf, but she wrote several sequels, so the wolf might appear in one of them (or I'm just not remembering it right, a distinct possibility).

You're right, the plots are very similar, but the book i'm looking for was definitely a kids book, which Clan of the Cave Bear most certainly isn't. Thanks for trying though.:catvery-happy:
