Probably in a low-quality YA or children's SF short story collection; probably in the 1970s but early-ish 80's might be possible. A boy aboard a colonizing spaceship is awakened from cryosleep every year on his birthday to observe the "colonists" (SPOILER plot twist revealed). He remains ten or twelve years old while they grow older every year (not in cryosleep). He sees them from their infancy until their adulthood. They struggle, have civil wars, and eventually kill each other off. One day when he wakes up and they are all dead, the computer says "Scoiological experiment completed. Commencng fertilization of colonist embryos" or similar.
There **may** have been another story in the book that was about sentient teddy bears, but the odds are not low that that is an incorrect memory. Thanks in advance.
