Teen Mystery Novels - late 80's, hardcover, black & white illustrations on cover...

Oh wow - I've been all over looking to find these, and if anyone can help me figure out what I'm looking for, you're an absolute genius.  I say this because the details I'm able to recall about these books are very limited, indeed.

All I can seem to remember is that I was a boy when I'd go to the town library and take one out.  It made me look forward to going to the library each week, and I used to love seeing if they had a new one in I hadn't read yet.  This would make the years the mid to late 80s, most likely.  The books were hardcover, relatively small and only between 150 and 200 pages, I'd speculate.  The thing I can definitely recall is the glossy cover the library would put over the actual cover, and that the covers were always black and white or perhaps charcoal illustrations of some kind.  Skeletons, graveyards, haunted houses, etc...the stories were almost certainly of the mystery/suspense genre, but aimed toward teen/young adults.

I don't remember the author or what the stories were about, other than this.  I'm not sure if anyone out there will have ANY idea, but even guesses could help at this point, as I'd love to re-discover these books.

Respond with any thoughts at all, it's greatly appreciated!  Ask me anything!  undies78@Yahoo.com

I also want to say that the books had a skull or something on the SPINE of each book in the series...but can't say for sure.

The only thing I can think of that comes close would be "The Three Investigators" series, but that may be slightly younger than what you're thinking of.

I used to go to the library and read through all of the mysteries available: Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, Trixie Belden, Three Investigators and whatever else I could find that they'd let me check out.
