I'm so glad I found this discussion!  There's a book I remember reading as a tween...would have been late 70's, I think.  It's about a brother & sister in England, who live with their widowed mother.  She's approached by an old "Solicitor" (the first time I'd ever heard the work), who asked her to come work as a caretaker at an old estate.  After they move their, the children meet the ghosts of a brother & sister who died in a fire at the esate a century before.  The present day children ended up going back, so it involved time travel also.  No idea of the title or author!

Sound familiar to anyone?

Ivorywyne--Your book is called "The Ghosts" by Antonia Barber and there was a movie release of it called "The Amazing Mr. Blunden".  Great book and the movie was good, too!  There are copies for sale here on B&N:
