Ugly Duckling Adaptation

Back when I was about 5, I found an adaptation of the Ugly Duckling. It was about a native american girl who was the ugliest in her village. The story was really similar to Hans Christensen's story although I don't remember every detail of the story but the girl was percieved to be the ugliest in the village, but by the ending of the story she went into some sort of river and became beautiful. I've looked for years for this book, I dont know if my detailing is correct but the illustrations were so beautiful thats probably why I remember it so well. I hope someone can help.

Perhaps you are looking for The Rough-Face Girl, retold by Rafe Martin and illustrated by David Shannon?
