We found out the Earth is flat!

I'm looking for a teen book from roughly the 1960's starring two male friends about 11 to 13 years old.  They are interested in science, a little bit like Danny Dunn and his friend Joe, without the evil genius aspect of The Mad Scientists' Club.  The book is narrated in the first person, from the point of view of one of the boys.

They have all sorts of misadventures, but the only one I really remember is toward the beginning of the school year when they have to conduct an experiment that will demonstrate how it is possible to estimate the circumference of the earth by taking readings from two large hills that are a known distance from each other.  The weather is unusually warm and humid for October, so their reading is off (it makes the one hill look like it is slightly away from where it actually is when viewed from the other hill).  The boys check their calculations over and over, and can't find anything wrong:  if the earth doesn't curve in the distance between the hills, it doesn't curve at all; it must be flat.

They are required to present their findings the next day at an assembly, conducted by the principal, in front of the whole school.  The principal, who trusts them because of work they've done previously, proudly asks them on stage, "So, boys, what did you find?"  They're trapped.  They must tell the truth.  One admits the horrible truth into the microphone, "We found out the earth is flat!"

Thunderous laughter shakes the auditorium.  Every student in the school is laughing at them.  The laughter goes on and on.  It would start to die down, then it would erupt again.  The principal is standing next to the boys with this ghastly frozen smile on his face.  It's awful, but it is also one of the funniest moments in all of teen/tween fiction.

I can't for the life of me remember anything else about this book -- not the title, author, heroes' names, anything!  Any help will be forever appreciated!

Re: We found out the Earth is flat!

I remeber this story (found your post using google for "we found out the earth is flat" looking for it) and can't remember much about it, but vague memory tells me:

(a) it was a short story rather than a book

(b) his partner's name was "Chet"

(c) the unusually warm weather is specifically referred to as "Indian summer."  I remember that because it was the first place I ever saw / heard that term

I wish I could help more or you could help me. :-/

Wow; thanks for responding; you're the first! :smileyhappy:

We're almost certainly thinking of the same story.  I thought it was a chapter in a book about these two boys, but it might easily be a short story.  Also the name "Chet" is ringing a bell; I'd bet good money you're right about that part!

This gives me hope that I might someday be able to solve this mystery!

Thank you so much!

The name "Chet" is not common anymore, but it rang a bell with me.  That was the name of the Hardy Boys' best friend.  I wonder if this might have been an incident in a Hardy Boys book.

Re: We found out the Earth is flat!

I'm almost sure not, because The Hardy Boys is something I would have recognized when I originally read the book (I'm almost positive I never read or heard of anything else starring these two guys), and The Hardy Boys were more into solving mysteries than conducting science experiments, but I really appreciate the suggestion.  And that is exactly how this mystery will someday get solved:  somebody out there will remember some obscure something that will enable us to narrow our search enough to get a hit!

Thanks again!

But their friend Chet was into trying all sorts of things, a new hobby in every book, which is why I thought this might have been a side-story separate from the main mystery of a book.

This mystery is finally SOLVED!!  It's Project:  Genius, 1962, written and illustrated by William Dimmity Hayes, Library of Congress Catalog Number 62-15367.  If you search for him, be sure to include his middle name, Dimmity:  there are dozens of William D. Hayes's out there.

I do feel a little dumb about how easy it was for me to finally solve it:  all I ever had to do was go to www.loganberrybooks.com, click on Stump the Bookseller, scroll down to "Return pages containing," type "flat," click on go, click on the resulting screens one at a time, press Ctrl-F once, and keep clicking on Next.  OK, it sounds like a lot when spelled out that way, but it really isn't.  It took a while, but I found the darned thing.  My used copy arrived this afternoon, and the scene in the school auditorium is very close to what I remembered.  And I can't for the life of me remember anything else about it.  I'll probably read nearly all of it in one sitting tonight.

Flygirl, you were absolutely right:  the sidekick's name is Chet (the hero's name is Pete) and the unusually warm weather is indeed described as Indian Summer.  Thanks again for encouraging me; I'm not sure I ever would have found this book otherwise.

I'm glad I found this thread.  I have been trying on and off for years to come up with the name of this book.
