YA Western/Adventure about lost gold mine

I read this back around 1975-6. It's about a boy living in the mid-west near a series of canyons. Legend is that there was a gold mine hidden somewhere in the canyons. There were also a series of carvings on some of the canyon walls that were suppose to be like directions to the mine but no one was ever successful. The story follows the boy as he investigates and then finally solves the mystery of the carvings and finds the hoard of gold at the end. He doesn't get to keep the gold because he triggers a trap that causes a cave-in that buries all the gold.

Sounds similar to the plot of a 1969 movie called "Mackenna's Gold."  Does anyone know if there's any connection?

This sounds like a book I'm looking for too.  I think it's set in Arizona's Superstition Mountains.
