I think the odd friend was called joy and had long blonde hair. I seem to remember a scene where they had fallen out after Joy went off with another crowd and her hair turned green form swimming in the chlorinated pool all summer. I also remember David Thoreuax was mentioned as her hero. There was at least two books with the same characters- they were 5th or 6th grade age and the title may have backflip or handstand or something similar in it.
