childrens story about tank captain from first world war [ Edited ]

Looking for the name of a fiction book involving a young mans experiences in the first world war.

I think he becomes an early tank captain and part of the story is returning to his childhood home for christmas where he is given a compass.

Cant remember author or title, I read it some time in the 1970s.

Any ideas ?
