Who was Robert? I thought that Esme's son's name was Robert, not Paul.

Lilly reallized that Esme was her real grandmother, correct?

Confusing isn't it? It took me a while to figure out the family tree.

Esme was raped by James (Jamie)

She had a son from that rape named Robert.

Kitty "adopted" Robert as her own son, and never telling Iris that she had a sister.

Robert grew up and married Sadie.

They had Iris.

So Iris grew up thinking that Robert was Kitty's son, and therefore, Kitty was Iris grandmother.

But in reality, Esme was really Robert's mother, and therefore, Iris' grandmother.

Alex is not a blood relation. He was Iris step-brother, because Robert (Iris' father) died young. Sadie, Iris' mother, married Alex's father. So Iris and Alex were step-brother and sister.

Phew! That took a lot out of me. I hope this helps.

Alex's father was George (p100-101)
To my recall there was no PAUL in this book. I think someone mentioned the name in another thread but it was just a confusion.

Kitty: presumed grandmother, she married man named Duncan
Esme: Kitty's sister and Iris's presumed great-aunt
Robert: Esme's son by James (rape) who Kitty adopts and passes off as her son
Sadie: Robert's wife & Iris Mother
Iris: presumed grandaughter of Kitty, only child of Robert & Sadie
George: Man Sadie remarries after Robert's death and father of Alex
Alex: son of George from his first marriage, step-son to Sadie & Step-brother to Iris
Fran: Alex's wife
Luke: married man Iris is having an affair with
Gina: Luke's wife
Peter Lansdun: Director of Psychiatric hospital
Hugh, Sr: Kitty & Esme's father
Hugh, Jr: Kitty & Esme's brother that dies in India
Ishbel: Kitty & Esme's mother
Jamila: Indian Nanny "ayah"

Those are all the main character's I can remember.

Does anyone remember if we're given the name of Kitty & Esme's grandmother? The one they go live with upon their return to Britain from India?
