Maggie O'Farrell's new novel, The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox, finds young Iris Lockhart mired in the everyday business of her life-running her vintage clothing shop, putting off her married boyfriend's attempts at commitment, trying to figure out just what it is that bothers her about her stepbrother's wife. And then, quite suddenly, she is told that she has a great-aunt no one in her family ever mentioned, one who has been locked away for over sixty years. How will the arrival of Esme Lennox unravel generations of family secrets? How will her heartbreaking story change the shape of Iris's life? A bestseller in the UK, The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox is the tale of three generations of women and a remarkable, mesmerizing story of family secrets, betrayal, and the terrible consequences of social mores.
