BIG NEWS: MEET THE PUBLISHER EVENT [ Edited ]

I'm very excited about a new feature we'll have at B&N's every month!

Starting in May, each month (in addition to any other feature we have going on) we will have a MEET THE PUBLISHER week.

I'll be inviting authors, editors, publicists, cover artists and people who work in all aspects of publishing to tell us about their company, their job and the books/authors they are excited about. They'll tell us about new and upcoming books they are publishing, so brace yourselves - your to-be-read piles are going to grow!

Kicking off this new event will be the PENGUIN GROUP, May 24-28

Next up will be HARPER COLLINS PUBLISHERS, June 21-25

MACMILLAN (St. Martin's Press, Thomas Dunne, etc.) will be featured July 18-23

This will be an ongoing feature, and I will invite both large and small publishers. I hope you'll join us for this exciting new event!

I thought it would be fun to meet the behind-the-scenes people AND the authors, plus this will give you all the opportunity to find out what's coming up from a lot of different authors.

It will be good to hear how they view their jobs. There is so much involved in getting a book out there. I know that there are many pieces I don't know about.

With so much upheaval in the industry, I thought it might be a good time to invite publishers, editors, etc. so we can get their take on things - sort of from the horse's mouth.

Thanks, Jen - I think all of us who write have to be a little nuts, and I've got that department covered!

I'm getting lots of non-fiction writing done. As far as my struggling fiction writing, I have good weeks and bad. I'm getting better, but it's a tough business and better isn't good enough. I have to keep writing, deleting, writing, deleting, writing, revising, and so on -- that's what takes so much time. I keep hoping I'll get one of these stories right on Draft One, but that's probably wishful thinking!

I know we have a lot of readers AND writers at BN.com, so I think it will be interesting for all of us to get an inside look at the industry.  Pass this on to any editors, authors, publicists, artists - anyone who works with books. The more the merrier!

Thanks, Deb. If I ever sell you can help with PR! I think a lot of people who love books end up writing, although some are more successful than others! This isn't about me, though. This is about our readers -- when you love a book you feel a sense of ownership, which is why it's so much fun when authors visit and you all have the opportunity to talk about what went into the writing of the book.

My idea is to take that further - to take you behind the scenes, so you can meet the publicists who market the books, the people who design the covers and the pages, the editors and copy editors and all the people whose hard work put those books in your hands. And, of course, the authors are invited, too.

I just hope the idea catches on so a lot of people will participate!

I've sent out a lot of invitations. I've had several publicists and authors express an interest but I'm still working on getting more behind the scenes people to confirm.
