Hey, Fricka!
Glad you liked my tale of romance . . . ah, so long ago! Though I know him a bit better now, after fifteen years. And I'm still here, and still happy. Others have asked me if I use my husband as inspiration, but the truth is, though he's very yummy and romantic, he's a classical guitar player and yoga teacher and vegetarian, and my heroes all tend to be commandos and mercenaries and the like. Not vegetarians. Not to say that guitar playing is not sexy . . . oh, yes, it is!
But seriously. That stuff is very superficial. I'm sure that all the more subtle emotional stuff is definitely inspired by my own real relationships. How could it be otherwise? What else is there in my brain but my own experience, to use as building materials?
It's a fun question to ponder!
Best,
Shannon
Shannon - I remember when I first read your romantic story on your website. It was some time ago, but I've never forgotten it. I'm glad the romance is still going strong!
I'm feeling a little romantic myself - I'm visiting my daughter right now, and my husband and son will join us this weekend for a big anniversary celebration. I'm convinced reading hot, exciting romance stories has strengthened my marriage!
Do you still live in Southern Italy? I've only ever been to Tuscany ( I loved it!), but my husband and son have visited Rome and other places further south. One of my son's favorite places in the world is Cinque Terra.
There is something inheritently romantic about Italy, I think. Maybe not so much if you live there from day to day, which would be a shame. The first time my husband and I went to Florence, we were strolling through the town at around 11 p.m. when a solo trumpeter started playing on the roof of a nearby building. *sigh*
Eloisa James lives in Italy, too - at least for part of the year. The climate must be conducive to romance writing - and, of course, romantic suspense!

Welcome Shannon,
Thanks for visiting with us again! I enjoyed reading your blog and I have read one of your books:
I do have some of your other books in my TBR pile and hope to get to them soon.

Hello everyone!
At Shannon's prodd...I mean, suggestion, I thought I might drop by, say hello, and introduce myself.
So, first, hello!
Next, as Shannon mentioned, we met and went to Yale together, and from there we followed (slightly) divergent paths. <grin>
Since then I've had the chance to do a number of things, all of which contributed to my ability to help Shannon out with the "choreography of violence." To name a few:
- I've been an Amy officer (United States Cavalry, thank you very much!);
- I've been an attorney;
- I've held a Federal Firearms License and operated a firearms business;
- I've been designing military command and control systems, for domains ranging from naval mine warfare, to counter-landmine, to combat engineering, to amphibious maneuver warfare, to cruise missiles and unmanned aviation for the better part of twenty years;
- I've been a certified firearms instructor for more than twenty years;
- I've been a firearms journalist, lecturer and author;
- I'm a freelance web and eCommerce developer; and, most importantly
- I'm a dad.
The perspective that all these varied activities have created is, I think, somewhat akin to Shannon's as an author. Shannon, as you all know, spends her days furiously transcribing the intricate and wonderful stories that she sees so that you all can enjoy them. Similarly, I spend my days peering into a world of "how technology SHOULD work" and "how events SHOULD transpire" and documenting them so that better systems can be built and people better trained to employ them. It's both challenging and fun.
I'm looking forward to getting to know you all.
Kindest regards,
Adam

Hi Adam! I'm so excited you joined our discussion. I loved Shannon's blog, in part because I'm a struggling fiction writer myself and I've often wished I had an expert whose brain I could pick. (That sounds like I'm a zombie, doesn't it?)
I just got back from my vacation a few hours ago, so I'm a bit frazzled right now. I'll come back tomorrow, when I will hopefully be able to frame some intelligent questions for you. More to follow!

I was fascinated with Shannon's blog and have since gotten to know Adam Firestone. I asked him to expand on the information he discussed here in a blog at Romance University. It just went up - stop by and check it out:

Since the audience here is mainly readers, I asked Shannon if I could share this blog with an audience of mainly writers. She agreed, and she'll be stopping by to visit here today (Jan. 26):
