Meet the Publisher: THE PENGUIN GROUP

Welcome to our first ever MEET THE PUBLISHER week!

Celebrate 75 Years of Penguin Books

Here's a press release from Penguin:

As you may know, July 30, 2010 is Penguin’s 75th Anniversary. In honor of our legacy of publishing great books we have a lot in store!  I wanted to share some of the excitement with the hope that you might be interested in covering some of our efforts in the months ahead.

  • The summer-long celebration of the Penguin Anniversary will kick-off at Book Expo of America when the Penguin Anniversary-mobile (a Penguin-orange Mini-Cooper with the Penguin logo) will appear on display.

  • The Penguin Mobile will be touring throughout the US to increase awareness of The Nature Conservancy, and promote literacy. It will be appearing at bookstores across the country and will be bringing some of Penguin’s well-known authors to anniversary parties at bookstores in their hometowns. Starting with Garrison Keillor (Lake Wobegon Days) in Edina, Minnesota, on June 13, and ending with Melissa Bank (The Girls’ Guide to Hunting and Fishing) on Long Island on August 8, this summer will be a nonstop celebration of literacy, conservation, and Penguin Books! Other bestselling authors hosting parties include Sue Monk Kidd (The Secret Life of Bees), Jan Karon (the Mitford series), Michael Pollan (The Omnivore’s Dilemma), Geraldine Brooks (March), Kim Edwards (The Memory Keeper’s Daughter), Janice Y. K. Lee (The Piano Teacher), William Kennedy (Ironweed), and Nathaniel Philbrick (In the Heart of the Sea).

  • At each anniversary event, a set of 75 of the most iconic titles from Penguin Books will be donated to a local library or literacy group. Each author will sign the Penguin-mobile as it makes its way across the United States, and the summer’s events will culminate with a party at the New York Public Library in September.

  • When the celebration is complete Penguin will auction the car with the proceeds going to the New York Public Library.  Penguin will also be donating sets of 75 books to numerous U.S. military bases in Iraq and Afghanistan.

  • As part of the anniversary celebration Penguin is proud to support The Nature Conservancy and their “Plant a Billion Trees Campaign.” Penguin Books was an original supporter of the campaign at its inception in 2008. So far, more than 5.5 million trees have been planted in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest.

  • In honor of Penguin’s Anniversary, readers can visit Penguinbooks75 which launches today May 17, the online hub for all the activities going on. This site includes exclusive material such as: an artifact gallery, an interactive timeline of Penguin’s history, a blog for the tour called “Follow the Car”, and a countdown of the top 75 Penguin books. The site will also include an essay called “The Original 10” with information on the first 10 Penguins. The site will also feature the “Penguin Inks” series and spreads from Penguin 75 edited by the acclaimed Penguin Art Director Paul Buckley.

  • Penguinbooks75 will also host an essay contest in which participants will share with us which of the 75 great penguins is their favorite and why. Winners will be determined by a team of Penguin staff and the grand prize winner will be awarded a full set of the 75 Penguins. 5 runners up will receive Penguin 75 tote bags.

Follow the Car

This summer the Penguin Car (a Penguin-orange Mini-Cooper with the Penguin logo) will be touring the United States to celebrate Penguin's 75th anniversary, increase awareness of The Nature Conservancy, and promote literacy. It will be appearing at bookstores across the country and bringing some of Penguin's well-known authors to anniversary parties at bookstores in their hometowns.

At each anniversary event, a set of 75 of the most iconic titles from Penguin Books will be donated to a local library or literacy group. Each author will sign the Penguin Car as it makes its way across the United States. When the celebration is complete Penguin will auction the car with the proceeds going to a literary nonprofit organization.

Check out the schedule to see when an author and the Penguin Car will be near your town.

A unique exploration into the subtle art of the book cover

High standards in art and design have always been part of Penguin's publishing program. Now, on the occasion of Penguin's 75th anniversary, longtime art director Paul Buckley has chosen seventy-five covers that represent the best of what Penguin has produced over the course of the last decade. Giving readers a rare behind-thescenes glimpse into the complex creation of a book's cover, Penguin 75 includes comments from authors, agents, and editors, as well as the designers and artists themselves. This witty and irreverent journey into the book world will appeal to lovers of art, design, and, of course, books.

With Contributions By:

Re: Meet the Publisher: THE PENGUIN GROUP

THE ORIGINAL 10

Where Are They Now?

Allen Lane launched Penguin Books in 1935 with ten titles. Some of the authors who were part of Penguin's introduction were well-known at the time, and continue to be today (Agatha Christie, Ernest Hemingway). But some of the other authors and books have faded into publishing history, and are no longer available. Below, we've taken a look at "The Original Ten" (as they've became known) in order to find out what they've been up to in the past seventy-five years.

"It is quite clear that the time has come to wake up to the fact that people want books, that they want good books, and that they are willing, even anxious, to buy them if they are presented to them in a straightforward, intelligent manner at a cheap price."

1935 was a hell of a dramatic year. The world was cast into a global economic downturn known as The Great Depression, a major ecological crisis — the Dust Bowl — laid waste to a huge swath of American and Canadian prairies, and in Europe Chancellor Adolf Hitler announced German rearmament, thus setting the stage for another bloody world war. But 1935 was also the year in which one man had a vision that would stand book publishing on its head.

Allen Lane had the revolutionary idea to offer cheap, quality books through outlets like railway stations and newsagents. He wanted to make good books as accessible and as cheap to procure — six pence! — as purchasing a pack of cigarettes from a kiosk. Lane launched his new line of books with ten inexpensive paperbacks, all of them reprints.

Simply designed with broad bands of color (orange for general fiction, green for crime fiction, dark blue for biographies), and using the font Gill Sans-Serif, the original ten books immediately established themselves within the history of design.

Skeptics dismissed Lane's idea as imprudent and crazy, but by March 1936 — ten months after the company's launch — one million Penguin books had been printed. Within a year Penguin had sold 3 million paperbacks. By April 1938 the first 140 titles had been published, as well as 30 Pelicans, 18 of the Shakespeare series, and one Penguin Special. The skeptics were proved wrong and a new, innovative publishing model was launched into the world.

Today the original first editions of those famous ten Penguins are extremely difficult to find, especially in good condition. In 1985, to commemorate its 50th anniversary, Penguin reprinted facsimiles of its ten original trendsetting books as a boxset; this set of reprints is almost as hard to find as the originals.

Most of the authors who were a part of Penguin's initial launch are well-known, bestselling authors that continue to be widely read today: Agatha Christie, Ernest "Papa" Hemingway, Dorothy L. Sayers. But others have since faded into publishing history and are either no longer available or else are exceedingly difficult to find. Seventy-five years after Lane launched Penguin, who's read or even heard of E.H. Young, Susan Ertz, or Eric Linklater?

Re: Meet the Publisher: THE PENGUIN GROUP

Dear Becke:

This is such a lovely idea, really, and I just enjoy the entire series of articles with information concerning The Penguin Group.

I am reading and rereading this because of all the valuable information here and finding out about the publisher through the videos. I also am checking out the blog site which I never knew about.

I also like their concern and efforts towards the libraries.

thank you so much for letting me know about this event.
