The Eye of God

The Eye of God: A Sigma Force Novel

Released on 06.25.2013

In a masterwork of historical mystery and scientific exploration, New York Times bestselling author James Rollins reveals an apocalyptic vision of the day after tomorrow, of a future predicted by the distant past, of a world doomed to burn under

The Eye of God

The crash of a U.S. military research satellite in the remote wilds of Mongolia triggers an explosive search for the valuable cargo it holds: a code-black physics project connected to the study of dark energy, the energy connected to the birth of our universe. But the last blurry image from the falling satellite captures a chilling sight: a frightening look into the future, a view of a smoldering eastern seaboard of the United States in utter ruin.

At the Vatican, a mysterious package arrives for the head of Pontifical ancient studies, sent by a colleague who had vanished a decade earlier. It contains two strange artifacts: a skull scrawled with ancient Aramaic and a tome bound in human skin. DNA testing reveals both are from Genghis Khan—the long-dead Mongol king whose undiscovered tomb is rumored to hold the vast treasures and knowledge of a lost ancient empire.

Commander Gray Pierce, and Sigma—joined by a pair of Vatican historians—race to uncover a truth tied to the fall of the Roman Empire, to a mystery bound in the roots of Christianity's origins, and to a weapon hidden for centuries that holds the fate of humanity.

Re: One Day Feature with Author JAMES ROLLINS!

 From James Rollins' website: http://www.jamesrollins.com/about/biography

James Rollins is the New York Timesbestselling author of international thrillers, translated into more than forty languages. His Sigma series has been lauded as one of the "top crowd pleasers" (New York Times) and one of the "hottest summer reads" (People Magazine). In each novel, acclaimed for its originality, Rollins unveils unseen worlds, scientific breakthroughs, and historical secrets--and he does it all at breakneck speed and with stunning insight.

Known for building high-octane adventures on a solid science foundation, Jim juxtaposes the familiar with the exotic and then turbo-charges his tales with suspense. Always mindful of historys legacy, Jim reveals how secrets, some hidden for centuries, can change the course of human events. His novels explore how advancing technology can impact society not just by the physical threats of unchecked developments, but also the spiritual and moral challenges that result. The true terror of technology is not the cogs and the wheels, but how it will change us, he says.

Jim has brought readers at least one book a year since his first thriller, Subterranean, was published in 1999. His novels have been deemed perfect "summer reads" by reviewers in publications as diverse as People magazine, USA Today, and Publisher's Weekly. His books have been translated for readers in 32 countries outside the United States.

The exotic locales of James Rollins novels have emerged as a hybrid between imagination, research, and Jims extensive travels throughout the United States and Europe, as well as New Zealand, the South Pacific, China, Southeast Asia, Africa, Australia, and South America. Recent travel includes book tours and stops across the country and several European nations, meeting readers and giving talks, seminars, and media interviews.

In recent years, much of Jims travel has involved meeting readers in small and large groups, at writing and fan conferences, and even at seagoing seminars. Jims mentoring skills and generosity have made him a popular writing instructor and guest speaker for workshops, symposia, conventions, and other forums throughout the country. He is among the core faculty of the annual Hawaii Writers Conference and Retreat.

In 2005, Jim joined other luminaries in the genre to create International Thriller Writers, Inc., to recognize and promote the thriller genre, to provide opportunities for mentoring, education, and collegiality among authors and industry professionals, and to grant awards for excellence in the genre.

As a boy, James Rollins immersed himself in the scientific adventures of Doc Savage, the wonders of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, and pulps featuring The Shadow, The Spider, and The Avenger. From there sparked the desire to become a writer himself. Already an accomplished storyteller, spinning elaborate tales that often were at the heart of pranks played on his brothers and sisters, Jim went on to hone his writing skills.

Before he would set heroes and villains on harrowing adventures, however, Jim pursued a career in veterinary medicine, graduating from the University of Missouri and establishing a successful veterinary clinic in Sacramento, California. This hands-on knowledge of, and interest in, medicine and science help shape the research and scientific speculation that set James Rollins' books apart.

When Jim is not writing, touring, giving seminars, or making presentations, he can be found spelunking, scuba diving, hiking, and/or traveling. Jim and his two- and four-legged family members live amid chew toys and paleontological treasures in Northern California.

A message from James Rollins:

Visit the Authors United for USA Cares Page

Providing support to our veterans and active military members is something that’s very important to me. Throughout the years, I’ve traveled on USO tours, sent books overseas, and donated time and money to the cause.

That’s why I founded Authors United for Veterans, a group of bestselling authors dedicated to raising funds and awareness for USA Cares. This nonprofit organization is dedicated to helping soldiers and their families, through job placement, housing assistance, and emergency aid. Their mission is simple: restore financial stability and self-sufficiency, while instilling a renewed sense of hope among the brave men and women who have put their lives on the line for our freedom.

USA Cares offers a hand up, not a hand out. They have provide grants rather than loans and they carefully screen each applicant. For over a decade, USA Cares has responded over 40,000 requests and provided over 10 million dollars in grants.

I am proud to support USA Cares and I encourage you to do the same.

Re: One Day Feature with Author JAMES ROLLINS!

Hi, James, welcome to the forum. I've read many of your books but not  the Sigma force novels. I thought Subterranean was excellent and such a thriller.

Re: One Day Feature with Author JAMES ROLLINS!

Since it's pretty quiet today (everyone must be sunning themselves or, if they're in Chicago, hoping their power doesn't go out during the storm!) I'm going to toss out a few questions.

James - How much research do your books require, on average? Does the length of time it takes you to write a book vary, or do you have it down to a fine art now?

Re: One Day Feature with Author JAMES ROLLINS!

Wow - who knew? I just came across James' Wikipedia listing:

James Rollins is the pen name of American veterinarian James Paul Czajkowski – born August 20, 1961 – a writer of best-selling, action-adventure, thriller novels. He gave up his veterinary practice in Sacramento, California to be a full-time author.

Rollins is an amateur spelunker and a certified scuba diver. These pastimes have helped him to provide content for some of his earlier novels, which are often set in underground or underwater locations.

Under the nom de plume James Clemens, he has also has published fantasy novels, including Wit'ch FireWit'ch StormWit'ch WarWit'ch GateWit'ch StarShadowfall(2005), and Hinterland (2006)

Re: One Day Feature with Author JAMES ROLLINS!

James - I never know if Wikipedia is accurate or not, but if the previous post is true, you've had quite a varied career. Was it difficult to make the jump to full time writer?

Re: One Day Feature with Author JAMES ROLLINS!

Argh! The gnomes, gremlins and trolls are keeping James from joining us (so sorry about this, James!).

He has responded to a few questions by email:

Response to the research question:

About 90 days of intense research, then on day 91 I start writing the novel. Every day, every page, requires additional touchstones of research making sure I get everything right, but the brunt of the research is done in the beginning.

Response to being a full time writer:

I haven't totally given up being a vet, I still do volunteer work with the local shelter. Animals will always be a part of my life and animals often creep into my writing. In THE EYE OF GOD, a tscy falcon and a freshwater seal play critical roles in the story. But I love telling stories for a living, I wouldn't give that up.

Re: One Day Feature with Author JAMES ROLLINS!

James - It sounds like your veterinary practice goes beyond dogs and cats, if you work with seals and falcons, too. Do you have a lot of pets of your own? Right now I only have one elderly cat, but I've had a LOT of cats, two rabbits, two gerbils and one dog over the years. It's funny, we didn't have many pets growing up because my mom wasn't crazy about animals, but all of my siblings have multiple pets--LOTS of dogs and cats!
