Going to RWA National Conference as a Golden Heart finalist is a blast! Everyone is excited for you and there are parties and receptions before the big event on Saturday evening.

I went by myself and didn't know a soul when I walked in, but the rest of my 'class' was just that - a class act. Groups got together for meals or a quick drink around everyone's schedule (lots of people meet with their editor or agent at the event and my publisher, like many of the NY presses, throws several parties) We still keep in touch and I think I mentioned in an earlier post that the group from the Pacific Northwest gets together for writing retreats and brainstorming sessions.

The ceremony itself is the closest I'll ever get to the Grammys! Everyone dresses up - evening gowns and stilettos - and makes a great event of it. Susanne Brockmann was the emcee - she's a riot - and the acceptance speeches were alternatively funny and heart-touching. There's champagne and dessert afterward but I think I spent most of the time hugging people.

National conference is a writer's event rather than a reader's conference but everyone who writes should go at least once.
