Re: Please Welcome Author DEBORAH CROMBIE!

Welcome Deb,

It's so nice to be able to talk with you here !

I really enjoyed  And Water For Stone, And I am looking forward to reading No Mark Upon Her.

I loved how you write about Duncan and Gemma's personal lives, as well as their very interesting cases.

And of course the setting in England, So much visible history there. I also agree that Blackheath has a very interesting setting as well. So much of England does !

Deb is there a place that just pulls you in for a story, when you are there other than London ?

 Optic

Becke, I totally agree that Deb's series would make a great PBS series addition.

I can't tell you enough how much I love Gemma and Duncan, they're so, well, British :smileyhappy:

There has been TALK, Becke, but talk is just that.  At the moment there is some new TALK, but that's all I know yet.  Fingers crossed. It would be great fun--if done well....

Re: Please Welcome Author DEBORAH CROMBIE!

Oh, there are always new places to write about, and places I'd like to go back to.  I've never set a book in Cornwall, or in the Lake District, or Northumberland, or Sussex . . . So many temptations!

But as Duncan and Gemma are with the Met, I have to come up with a pretty good reason to send them out of London, and they can't always be getting involved on cases while on  holiday:smileyhappy:

And there are so many parts of London I love to write about, that the possibilities are endless without ever leaving the city....

Well, it would have to be a UK production company that would partner with PBS.  All very complicated.  But yes, would be thrilled, I really would.

Of course, the production and casting are so important. And it would be perfect if you did the screenwriting!

Do you have contacts there who advise you about juristictional boundaries? Does their territory spread to Greater London, the Home Counties?

That's a job I would very much want to leave to someone else!  I have no experience at screenwriting--it's a completely different beast.  And I think adapting a series of novels into teleplays is a challenge even for someone with experience.

Re: Please Welcome Author DEBORAH CROMBIE!

I do have contacts, and the internet is now a great source of information about the Met and their boundaries.  I must admit, however, that I have sometimes stretched things just a bit in order to get Duncan or Gemma involved in a case....:smileyhappy:

I can understand that. Some screen adaptations are really well done, but I always worry when books I like are made into movies or TV shows. Those characters are real people to me, and I hate it when the screenplays get them wrong.

I doubt anyone would spot it except someone who works for the Met!

Re: Please Welcome Author DEBORAH CROMBIE!

Television adaptation is a pretty daunting prospect.  There are some that have been done brilliantly, and some that have been real clunkers.  And some that have been done twice (Rebus.) But I still hope the books get a chance at it one of these days...

It's funny, I love Ian Rankin's Inspector Rebus books - I know there are televised adaptations of it, but I don't think I've ever seen them.

I'm hooked on Foyle's War, Lewis, Midsomer Murders, New Tricks and The Last Detective.

Re: Please Welcome Author DEBORAH CROMBIE!

I love all the programs you mentioned.  In fact, although I loved Colin Dexter's Morse books, I loved the TV series even more--and I like Lewis even better.  It's brilliant!  A friend has been the senior script editor for Midsomer, but he's leaving this year, so I don't know what's going on with the series.

As for Rebus, it was done first starring John Hannah.  While I love John Hannah, he just wasn't Rebus.  The series was remade a few years ago starring Ken Stott as Rebus and that version is very good.

I love Peter Robinson's books but have not been thrilled with the TV adaptations.  So it's a risky business...

I love Peter Robinson's books, too - I'm excited that he's writing a guest blog for us here. I haven't seen the TV adaptations of his books. I also like P.D. James - the televised versions of her books are very good, but I pictures the stories differently in my head.

I love John Thaw, but I have to say - I like LEWIS much, much more than I liked the Inspector Morse series. Like you, I'm a fan of John Hannah, but I can't see him as Rebus.

I think Midsomer is finished, and it makes me very sad. I think I've seen every episode. That's VERY exciting about your friend - what a fun series to work on! I've seen a couple shows on the making of Midsomer Murders, and they seem like a very nice group of people - both the actors and the people working behind the scenes.
