Re: Please Welcome Author M. William Phelps!

Great case. I'm all over it. Waiting for the second trial to conclude. I'm told March 2013 now.

Re: Please Welcome Author M. William Phelps!

I investigate all unsolved serial killer cases on DARK MINDS, so no, I don;t use material form my books.

Script? No script. This is nonfiction. I control content because the show is based on my life as an investigative journalist out there hunting serial killers with the ehlp of an actual serial killer.

Do you have to have a team of lawyers check everything before the show airs to protect you from possible lawsuits?

Many lawyers are involved every step of the way, yes.

It's a combination of everything: people, place, investigation, the motives behind the murder(s), and the detectives involved.

Ahhhh. Well, thanks for the clarification. Clearly, I haven't seen your TV show yet. I guess from the title, I thought it would be like another Criminal Minds. Anyway, I notice that the poster for the show does not indicate which network/channel airs the show. Pleeeese say it isn't on HBO!!!! My household is only on basic cable.

Also, I was very sorry to read that your sister-in-law was murdered. That is awful! It's one thing to read a cozy mystery novel, but another situation entirely to have that kind of crime hit so close to home. How's your brother doing? Does he have any imput in your investigations?

Re: Please Welcome Author M. William Phelps!

DARK MINDS airs on Investigation Discovery (ID). It's on hiatus now, and we're getting ready to head into production on season 2, but ID should be re-running it this spring and summer. You can view scenes from the show here:

My brother ... is, well, he's dead now. Died at 47 of liver disease. His drug use spiraled out of control after she was murdered and it finally got him. Sad situation. My niece and two nephews seem to be doing okay, though. They're grown now, in their 20s, early 30s.

I call drug addiction the worst serial killer on the planet!

What an awful situation - I'm so sorry about your brother. I'm glad to hear his kids are doing well.

Ditto. In effect, the criminal who killed your sister-in-law actually took two lives that day--your sister-in-law AND your brother. It just took longer for your brother to die, but he was clearly dying for years.

Have to agree about drug addiction--what a scourge it is. I don't think we can pat ourselves too much on the back about all our wonderful technioloy putting us far ahead of our antecedents as long as we have this horrible epidemic affecting our society. I don't think there are too many families who don't have at least one member who's been affected, or else they have a close friend who is. Tragic.

So glad to hear your brother's children are doing well. That's at least one ray of sunshine in that dark story.

P.S. Was the criminal who killed your sister-in-law ever brought to justice?

Re: Please Welcome Author M. William Phelps!

She was strangled with a telephone cord, a pillowcase was placed over her neck. Her case remains unsolved.

Three lives, actually ... My sister-in-law was five months pregnant.

Tragic.

Tragic indeed.  That is almost beyond comprehension. I can see why you would have a great interest in unsolved crimes. Do you have any hope that one day, some police officer or detective will finally solve her case?

Her case is definitely solveable. I think they know. I'm confident the case will be closed one day.

Re: Please Welcome Author M. William Phelps!

Mathew - You mentioned that your show is on hiatus right now. Do you have any idea when the next season will be aired?

Can you give us a rough idea what is involved in putting together a show like yours?

Re: Please Welcome Author M. William Phelps!

Next spring is when season 2 will air. But you can catch season in reruns, just keep an eye on ID's site.

Well, putting together a show like mine, let me just say, is the hardest thing I've ever done. The road work alone is exhaustive. Months on the road. Longs days and nights. Then we come back and still have months and months of work to do. Then voice-overs ... it's never-ending. We work on the show right up until it airs, basically. Then there's all the work I do beforehand: investigating, interviewing people, developing leads, etc. I sound like I am complaining, I'm not. Just explaining. I'me very grateful for the success of the series and my working life. I am blessed. And my fans, well, I am so honored and humbled by them all. I get up every morning and just take a moment to be grateful that I am allowed to do what i do.

That's very good news. I have the thought that whoever murdered your sister-in-law is probably already in prison, having been caught at committing a different felony.  If I remember correctly, that was what happened with John Walsh--the man who murdered his son Adam was apparently already in prison for another crime he had committed.

I sort of feel towards these criminals like the ecaped Nazi's after WWII. I don't care how old the person is when he(or possibly she) is finally caught. That person deserves to be punished, whether in a state that allows the death penalty or not.

I don't think there's a statue of limitation for murder, is there?
