Re: Please Welcome Author MICHAEL PALMER for his 2nd Visit to B&N!

Hi Michael!

An author I know recently mentioned that when she is interviewed she tends to be asked the same old/same old questions. She asked her fans for suggestions for interview questions, and they came up with some great ones. So, even though these aren't original, I'm going to post a few for you:

What are you most likely to be doing when you Really Should Be Writing?

Who was your favorite character in your books, and why?

Was there any particular scene that you had difficulty writing, and why?

What is the weirdest thing you do when writing to get into the process?

What is the worst interview question you were ever asked?

Michael Palmer - Newsletter - A HEARTBEAT AWAY

Is it Spring, yet?

A Heartbeat Away, On Sale FEB 15, 2011

Greetings from the snow belt in... well, we're all in the snow belt!! I am writing to encourage you to pass the days until TRUE SPRING with a real good book:

A Heartbeat Away

My 16th thriller will be in stores on FEBRUARY 15, 2011. In it, President James Allaire has just started his 5th State of the Union Address when domestic terrorists with an unnamed agenda release WRX3883--a deadly, highly contagious virus--into the House Chambers. Allaire knows its properties well. His administration only recently has given up on its development. Too volatile and dangerous.

The clock is ticking as he quarantines the entire Capitol, including the seventeen immediate successors to the Presidency. Only the Doomsday Successor, this night the Secretary of Homeland Security, is outside the Capitol walls.

Within twenty-one days, all 700 trapped inside the Capitol will die horribly.

The country's only hope is virologist Griffin Rhodes, currently in a federal penitentiary because of what Allaire is convinced is terrorist activities--including the attempted theft of WRX3883.

Here's what critics are saying:

SUSPENSE MAGAZINE - "PALMER RATCHETS THE TENSION TO A BREATHTAKING LEVEL. . . STUNNING IN ITS REALISM AND TRULY TERRIFYING."

ROMANTIC TIMES - "A TAUTLY CONSTRUCTED PUZZLE WITH CHARACTERS THAT MAKE READERS WHIZ THROUGH PAGES LATE AT NIGHT."

ASSOCIATED PRESS - "THE TWISTS FLY IN "A HEARTBEAT AWAY," AND THE RESULTS CREATE A TERRIFYING SCENARIO."

CRIMESPREE MAGAZINE - "PALMER MAKES WHAT CLANCY WRITES LOOK LIKE BOXCAR KIDS."

A HEARTBEAT AWAY is available http://cts.vresp.com/c/?MichaelPalmerBooks/36054c8eef/4da14b0d17/061e08b0b6 href="to buy online in hardcover and digital format. You can also purchase the audiobook from Macmillan audio, which is narrated by Robert Petkoff.

Oath of Office

Sending you warm wishes this holiday season from Boston's North Shore.

As most of you know, my 17th thriller Oath Of Office is coming out on February 14, 2012 in hardcover and e-book. The novel was inspired by the documentary Food Inc. If you have not seen it, I recommend renting a copy (and not watching it right after dinner). The film exposes many of the frightening and hidden realities of the food industry and lifts the veil separating us from what we eat. I was most impressed with the efforts and passion of the featured food justice advocates, farmers, writers and policy makers. It was individuals such as Michael Pollan, author of The Omnivores DilemmaJoel Salatin, author and farmer atPolyface Farm in Virginia and Barbara Kowalcyk, food safety advocate whose two and a half year old son died of E.coli poisoning that motivated me to write Oath of Office.

Here is a bit about the story: The novel opens when Dr. John Meacham goes on a shooting spree at his medical office killing his business partner, staff, two patients and himself. The blame then falls on Dr. Lou Welcome, who worked with Meacham years before as a counselor, after John's medical license had been revoked for alcoholism and angry outbursts. Lou knows that Meacham was an excellent doctor who deserved to be practicing medicine, and fought hard for his license to be restored after his rehabilitation. As Lou looks into matters, the terrifying evidence he finds takes him down a path to an unspeakable conspiracy that seems to lead directly to the White House and those in the highest positions of power. At the heart of the terror is corn modified with the genes of the flesh-eating termite Macrotermes bellicosus.

Over the few months until the release of the book, I will post articles, questions and discussions on my WebsiteFacebook and Twitter pages relating to themes in OoO. I would love to hear your thoughts about the food justice movement. What books, movies, articles and experiences have furthered your understanding of food ethics issues? What farms and businesses in your community are providing options to eat and shop locally? What specific food issues do you wish you knew more about? Please share your insight and on my Facebook page—I am happy to respond to and highlight your thoughts.

Here are a few more things to look for on this page in the coming months:

  • Food for Thought Discussions: Every other week I will post a new article or question on my Facebook and Twitter pages about the themes presented in OoO. On Facebook, join me by going to the discussion tab, and on twitter follow the hashtag FoodForThought. For each discussion, I will award two contributors (one on FB, one on Twitter) with a signed copy of the book. Do you have a question that you would like to pose to the group? Email me your idea at michaelpalmerbooks@gmail.com.
  • OoO Sneak Peeks: I will provide a few sneak peeks of the beginning of OoO before its release date. For now, take a look at the Prologue and let me know what you think. I will post more chapters as we get closer to pub date.
  • Financial help: For every book preordered during the three weeks leading up to release date of OoO, I will donate $1 dollar to The Food Project- a great organization making change near my own home in Massachusetts. Learn more about their story.
  • Calling all book bloggers: Are you a book blogger or reviewer? I would love to offer you an advanced reading copy of OoO to review and post on your website, and another copy of the book to giveaway to a reader of your choice. Send me an email with your mailing address to michaelpalmerbooks@gmail.com.
  • Events: I will be doing a number of appearances following the release of OoO, some with my son Daniel, whose thriller Helpless comes out 1/31/12. I would love to see you at one (or more) of them. Take a look at the full list and RSVP.

Thank you again for your support, readership and friendship over the years. I am truly grateful.

Warm regards,

Michael Palmer Signature

There's an interview with Michael and Daniel in the new issue of Romantic Times magazine. And there are some reviews by our own Debbie Haupt, too!

Oath of Office

Greetings from Boston,

It is hard to believe that January is almost over. A few weekends ago I spent time in NYC with my son Luke, walking around and seeing some shows, and we hardly needed a coat. I hope that you are enjoying the winter season with your friends and family.

The big news from here is that my 17th medical and political thriller novel OATH OF OFFICE, is now on available for pre-order by all major book retailers. As many of you know, this book is a special one for me. I was inspired to write it after watching Food, Inc, a 2008 documentary by Robert Kenner, which opened my eyes to the unpleasant realities behind our food system. At the heart of the terror in OATH OF OFFICE is corn modified with the genes of a flesh-eating termite known as Macrotermes bellicosus. Although the book is a work of fiction, the issues surrounding genetic modification, corporate farming and shoddy labeling have a dramatic impact on our culture and environment.

There are many individuals and organizations that are directly addressing the problems at the forefront of Food, Inc and OoO. One that I am most impressed with is The Food Project, which is near my home in Eastern Massachusetts. The Food Project works to engage young people in personal and social change through sustainable agriculture.

As a thanks for what they do, I will be donating a percentage of my OATH OF OFFICE pre-order sales (hardcover and eBook) to their efforts. I will also reward all readers who pre-order the book and show their support with a signed bookplate and enter them to win the Grand Prize: a personal phone call from me to them or their book club.

Here is how you can participate:

Pre-order a hardcover or eCopy of OoO from any retailer. Let me know that you pre-ordered the book by tagging @michael_palmer @TheFoodProject and #OathofOffice onTwitter or by posting on my Facebook page.

I will announce the Grand Prize winner on February 14, 2012 (OoO release date).

If you have already pre-ordered the book you can still participate. Just let me know on Facebook or Twitter.

Preorder the book today, and help me to support this great organization.

Looking for a sneak peek of OATH OF OFFICE? You can find the beginning chapters included in the A HEARTBEAT AWAY eBook (only $2.99 through February 14, 2012).

I am also excited to say that my son Daniel is coming out with his second bookHELPLESS on January 31, 2012. Like DELIRIOUS, HELPLESS dives into the hidden perils of everyday technology. The book was noted by Library Journal as a terrific thriller and received a starred review from Publishers Weekly. I am very proud that his years of hard work have paid off and I am looking forward to spending more time with him on the road in February. Learn more about HELPLESS and pre-order the book today.

Helpless

Thank you for your support of my writing.

Warm regards,
