Since 1997, you’ve been coming to BarnesandNoble.com to discuss everything from Stephen King to writing to Harry Potter. You’ve made our site more than a place to discover your next book: you’ve made it a community. But like all things internet, BN.com is growing and changing. We've said goodbye to our community message boards—but that doesn’t mean we won’t still be a place for adventurous readers to connect and discover.

Now, you can explore the most exciting new titles (and remember the classics) at the Barnes & Noble Book Blog. Check out conversations with authors like Jeff VanderMeer and Gary Shteyngart at the B&N Review, and browse write-ups of the best in literary fiction. Come to our Facebook page to weigh in on what it means to be a book nerd. Browse digital deals on the NOOK blog, tweet about books with us,or self-publish your latest novella with NOOK Press. And for those of you looking for support for your NOOK, the NOOK Support Forums will still be here.

We will continue to provide you with books that make you turn pages well past midnight, discover new worlds, and reunite with old friends. And we hope that you’ll continue to tell us how you’re doing, what you’re reading, and what books mean to you.

A Big Hello Everyone:

Right off the top, this is another special "WINNER'S CHOICE" free draw edition -

details later in this edition of SHOTS FROM THE RANGE.

Welcome, welcome welcome to all new members from around the world, from my new

reader Juan S. D. in Northern Spain and to new readers in Germany, Norway,

Poland, Denmark, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, the USA and Canada. Thank you

all so much for joining us.

I can't tell you how much I enjoy your very, very kind supportive notes. I

invite you to drop me a line any time. As always, I will do my best to respond

to them all!

On the News front:

Many things are developing now, but I'll wait until things are confirmed. I hope

to have more news after Christmas.

For now I am anxiously awaiting the April 2011 release of IN DESPERATION and I

invite you to please consider pre-ordering your copy online now.

In fact, why not consider a book for a Christmas gift?

Had a great time in St. Thomas, Ontario. For those who were there, wasn't that

fun. And the music was outstanding. It was good to see everybody at Bouchercon

in San Francisco, and I had a wonderful time at the Northern California

Independent Booksellers Conference in Oakland.

Things to look forward to: After Christmas - you, my diehard readers - will get

a chance on a draw to win the first signed ARC, - "Advance Reading Copy" of IN

DESPERATION remember that will be after Christmas.

AWARDS

Unfortunately, VENGEANCE ROAD was not chosen as  Best Paperback Original by the

Private Eye Writers of America, or the International Thriller Writers.

And my short story, “Backup” never went further than a FINALIST for a THRILLER

AWARD for BEST SHORT STORY. That's OK. While I did not win, I was truly honoured

by a triple award list year! It was very cool.

NEW WRITING AVAILABLE NOW! SHORT STORY

My new never before seen short story "The Last Pursuit" is now available in

ORIGINAL SINS, a new anthology by Crime Writers Association published by Severn

House in the UK.

The North American edition will be released early in 2011. It is a compelling

story. Scorpion Press of the UK will be bringing out a limited collector's

edition which will feature original signatures by every anthologized author in

the collection - I think they go for $200.00 each - that's right, for serious

collectors.

Remember, if you have a friend who might enjoy receiving this  newsletter,

please pass it on – they can subscribe off the homepage of my website

www.rickmofina.com.

Re: Please Welcome Author RICK MOFINA!

Where does the time go? It seems like yesterday Rick was visiting with us, and now he has a new book coming out soon:

In Desperation

Jack Gannon is pushed to the brink…

A single mother answers a knock at her door and enters a nightmare…

Eleven-year-old Tilly Martin is dragged from her suburban bedroom. Her mother Cora pleads for mercy but the kidnappers are clear: if they don’t get their $5 million back in five days, Tilly dies. If anyone contacts police, Tilly dies.

A reporter receives a heart-stopping email that rips open the past…

Journalist Jack Gannon’s estranged sister, Cora, vanished decades ago. Now she is frantically reaching out to him for help. Cora tells him about the shameful mistakes she’s made—but she guards the one secret that may be keeping her daughter alive.

Time is running out…

In the U.S. and Mexico, police and the press go flat out on Tilly’s case. But as Gannon digs deeper into his anguished sister’s past, the hours tick down on his niece’s life.

“A blisteringly paced story that cuts to the bone. It left me ripping through pages deep into the night.” James Rollins, New York Times bestselling author.

“Hell hath no fury like a mother wronged. In Desperation is a “A superbly written thriller that plumbs the depths of every parent’s nightmare. Timely, tense, and terrifying, this book is sure to be a big hit!” Brad Thor, #1 New York Times bestselling author.

Hi Everyone: A very warm summer 2011 welcome to all loyal friends and new members from Thailand, Ireland, Germany, India Canada, the U.S., Australia, the UK, New Zealand, Europe. It is also now available on Smashwords.com http://www.smashwords.com/books/search?query=rick+mofina Now, through Smashwords, it should be downloadable and available for Nook, Sony Reader, Kobo, and most e-reading apps including Stanza, Aldiko, Adobe Digital Editions, that are good for reading on PC, or for home printing, and palm readers, too. By early August, DANGEROUS WOMEN & DESPERATE MEN should appear on bn.com, chapters.ca and other online sites. Unfortunately at this time, there will be no hardcopy or paperback. We are very excited about the release of DANGEROUS WOMEN & DESPERATE MEN which will roll out over the next few months. You are getting the first peek and, what I think, is a cool offer. First let me tell you about this collection. DANGEROUS WOMEN & DESPERATE MEN is a collection of four short stories of four people on the brink; a broken-hearted woman in Las Vegas plots to take what she is owed, a haunted street cop finds his life on the line in a way he never expected; a desperate agent in California makes a life-changing choice; a hard-working middle-aged woman whose world is coming apart fights back with shocking vengeance. This collection includes "Lightning Rider," the winner of Canada's top literary prize for crime fiction, the Arthur Ellis Award for Best Short Story, presented by the Crime Writers of Canada. 1. Blood Red Rings -- After 24 years of putting his life on the line, Officer Frank Harper sees it all tick down to one defining moment in this soul-wrenching short story. 2. Lightning Rider --Twenty-six year-old Jessie Scout had endured a life steeped in pain. She had come to Las Vegas, a city of risk, not to gamble. But to collect. This short work won Canada's top literary prize for crime fiction, the Arthur Ellis Award for Best Short Story, presented by the Crime Writers of Canada. 3. Three Bullets To Queensland -- Ike Decker, a loss recovery agent, for the armored car industry, is a desperate man. He has a dream and the only thing in his way to realizing it is Paco Sanchez and $1.2 million in stolen cash. 4. As Long As We Both Shall Live -- Liz Dalton's world was coming apart but she fought back with a shocking vengeance. Presented in the format of a court transcript, this short work was named a finalist for Canada's top literary prize for crime fiction, the Arthur Ellis Award for Best Short Story, presented by the Crime Writers of Canada. With this volume readers step into the lives of ordinary people as they battle extraordinary circumstances. You can obtain an E version of each short story individually, or all four the collection DANGEROUS WOMEN & DESPERATE MEN which also contains added features, samples of my longer books and essays about the stories behind them. Now, here comes the offer aimed to help spread the word about DANGEROUS WOMEN & DESPERATE MEN. Go to the above links of the sites, check out the individual short stories. Contact me and I will send you one pdf for PC or MAC of one of the short stories (NOT DANGEROUS WOMEN & DESPERATE MEN) but one of the four short stories at no cost - it should be downloadable onto your KINDLE, or your PC, or MAC - we tested it. BUT you get the story free provided you agree to post a review of the story on its page site on Amazon.com or amazon.co.uk or Amazon.de and or Smashwords. It does not have to be a long review, just a fair and honest one. NOTE: YOU CAN ONLY POST ON AMAZON IF YOU ARE ALREADY A CUSTOMER. Please, I trust you with that part of the deal. Later, in early August, I will make the same offer owners of for Nook, Kobo, and all other readers. To my readers who do not own an E-reader, I am also willing to send you a free pdf of one short story for PC or MAC, if you also agree to post or tell others . To receive a free short story email me at rmofina@gmail.com with the subject DANGEROUS How does that sound? You could be reading a story soon but you have to post a review . My first French Language edition of any book will be released this fall. Je suis tellement heureux. I am so excited. My first French language edition is coming! My French publisher Alire will release La Dérive des anges (If Angels Fall) in the fall. The dated posted online is not correct - the release has been pushed back. The cover is not yet posted but you can pre-order. Je vous prie de m'excuser. Mon français est très mauvaisma Francais, c'est tres mal.

THE NEXT THRILLER The countdown begins for the Sept 25, 2012 release (Note the date is an approximation but this is the time frame) in paperback and eBook of my new standalone thriller: THEY DISAPPEARED, a story inspired by a true incident that happened to me. Here's a summary of TD: A loving family fracturing under pressure ….. Jeff Griffin, a mechanic and his wife, Sarah, a school teacher, travel from Montana to Manhattan to give Cole, their nine-year-old son, his dream vacation as they secretly face the heart-wrenching turmoil that has them teetering on divorce. In the wake of their heartbreak a mother and son disappear … While sightseeing near Times Square Jeff goes into a store to buy batteries for their camera and realizes that what he and Sarah have is worth fighting for – but upon returning to the street he finds Sarah and Cole have vanished. A frantic father searches for clues as time ticks down … Battling his anguish and police Jeff fights to find Sarah and Cole amid growing fears that his wife and son have become entangled in a global plot against the UN General Assembly meeting in New York. Praise for THEY DISAPPEARED: New York Times Bestselling Author, Tess Gerritsen says: "Rick Mofina's tense, taut writing makes every thriller he writes an adrenaline-packed ride." Fresh Fiction calls it: "An adrenaline-filled, rapid-paced thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat!" Best of the Holidays to Everyone:

I know this is a busy time of the year, a time to reflect. Goodness knows much
has happened in the world to give us pause.

I want to thank you all for your kind support in making They Disappeared and The
Burning Edge bestsellers.

I know how lucky I am to have readers like you.

Thank you.

We have lots to offer in this special edition. To start, we'll be offering a
draw to win an autographed copy of They Disappeared or The Burning Edge, it will
be your choice - details will be listed below.

As some of you know my older books are hard to find and in some cases, nearly
out of print.

I have been working hard to obtain all rights back, so I can offer them to you
in another format.

We have had some success securing the eRights with my first series, featuring
San Francisco Star reporter Tom Reed and SFPD Homicide Inspector Walt Sydowski.

I hope the series will find new readers and new life in the digital format, as I
believe they are strong stories.

So, I am pleased to announce that we have finally (as some of you may already
know) posted for sale eBooks of the following 4 titles from my first series,
featuring San Francisco Star reporter Tom Reed and SFPD Homicide Inspector Walt
Sydowski.

You can now purchase on most all major online sites around the world English
language eBooks of

IF ANGELS FALL

BLOOD OF OTHERS

BE MINE

wherever eBooks are sold.

* COLD FEAR will be a Kindle exclusive- more on that a little later.

Please read the following carefully as I know I will get questions.

I do not yet own the eRights to No Way Back, so at this time it is not available
as an eBook, but the other four books in the award-winning Reed-Sydowski are.

BARNES & NOBLE FEATURE

Starting today and for the four following weeks, Barnes and Noble will feature
the eEditon of Blood of Others on its

NOOK First page, which features "Compelling Reads from Emerging Authors."

Here is the link:

http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/NOOK-First-eBook-Featured-Authors/379003312

Please let me know what you think

So to recap, for those of you with eReading devices, or even computers, you can
obtain eEditions of

IF ANGELS FALL
BLOOD OF OTHERS
BE MINE

They are available from most major online sites, and if you try Smashwords.com
you can purchase the titles and read them on you desk top, or lap top, even if
you don't have an eReader.

For my new readers, here are the summaries of the books and while they feature
continuing characters, they can be read in any order like standalone thrillers.

IF ANGELS FALL
Tom Reed is a crime reporter with The San Francisco Star, whose superb
journalistic skills earned him a Pulitzer nomination. But years later Reed’s
life is coming apart. His editor wants him fired. His wife has left him to
wrestle with his demons. Alone, Reed is tormented by the fear he may have caused
the suicide of an innocent man suspected of murdering a two-year-old girl.

Reed’s friend on the case is legendary San Francisco Homicide Inspector, Walt
Sydowski, who has one of California’s highest clearance rates. He is also a
lonely widower haunted by the fact he cannot solve the girl's heartbreaking
death.

Both men grapple with the past while they race the clock to learn the truth
behind a several new abductions that have anguished the Bay Area, in this
acclaimed thriller set in the late 1990s.

COLD FEAR
In the remote, rugged corner of Montana’s Glacier National Park known as the
Devil’s Grasp, little Paige Baker of San Francisco disappears with her dog,
Kobee, while on a camping trip with her family; or so her mother and father have
told authorities.

A multi-agency task force launches a massive search as Paige fights to survive
in the wilderness. Time hammers against her and soon the nation is gripped by
the life-and-death drama.

Secretly, behind the scenes, the FBI grows suspicious of Paige’s parents. Their
recent history and disturbing evidence links them to a horrible secret from the
past.

BLOOD OF OTHERS
The disappearance and ritualistic murder of a lonely San Francisco insurance
clerk puts a relentless crime reporter and legendary homicide cop on separate
tracks in their pursuit of a killer.

The suspect lures solitary, vulnerable women out of their quiet worlds and into
his nightmare as he races the clock and travels the globe searching for the one
woman who will forgive the unforgivable.

In the course of a widening investigation, Olivia Grant, a shy gift store clerk
who aches to escape her painful solitude, meets Ben Wyatt, an outcast San
Francisco cop on the case, Wyatt is a man gripped with self-doubt over the
shooting of his former partner.

Blood of Others is a study of loneliness and human frailties; a story steeped in
terrifying suspense that threatens to destroy the lives of those drawn into it
as it rockets to a heart-pounding conclusion.

Blood of Others won Canada’s top literary prize for crime fiction, the 2003
Arthur Ellis Award, given by the Crime Writers of Canada for Best Novel. In his
praise of the book, James Patterson, the #1 Worldwide Bestselling Author, said
Blood of Others, was: “Tense, realistic, and scary in all the right places."

BE MINE
A personal message written in human blood is left for crime reporter Molly
Wilson at the murder scene of her boyfriend, San Francisco Homicide Inspector,
Cliff Hooper.

The horrific death of a revered cop shocks the San Francisco Police Department's
Homicide Detail. Shaken to the core, his grieving fellow detectives go flat out
to find his killer under the glare of the city's news media.

Be Mine is a study in psychological suspense that takes the reader on an
unrelenting nail-biting journey into the darkest regions of a tormented human
heart. "Mofina continues his string of gripping, tense thrillers that explore
the intricacies of crime reporting." - Orlando Sentinel.

"Another riveting read from one of the leading thriller writers of the day." -
Penthouse magazine, on Blood of Others.

If you obtain these books, please consider posting an online review

My next book is a standalone thriller titled:

INTO THE DARK.

It is to be published in late June 2013 but you can pre-order your copy now on
most major sites.

Here is a summary of the story:

The sole survivor of a heartbreaking family tragedy...
Claire Bowen, a haunted psychologist, devotes her life to helping troubled women
rebuild theirs. But her dream of a family with her new husband, Robert, a pilot
and local hero, begins to crumble as disturbing revelations from his past
emerge.
And a grieving cop who lures a killer from the shadows...
Detective Joe Tanner, struggling to overcome his wife's death while raising
their little girl alone, heads the task force formed to stop the monster who has
resurfaced with a chilling message.
Race the clock in a life-and-death struggle to save the next victim...
In the wake of five cold-case murders across Los Angeles, one of Claire's most
promising patients vanishes. Gut instinct tells Tanner the truth is within his
grasp, while Claire is torn between guilt and terror over what's to come. As
time runs out, both are pulled deeper and deeper into an unspeakable darkness.
